Environmental Security

This document discusses water pollution and efforts to address it. It defines water pollution and lists major causes such as deforestation, agriculture, and dumping. It outlines threats like contamination of the food chain, loss of biodiversity, and disease. Two organizations working on solutions are described - Global Destruction Org which coordinates action but needs more publicity, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' clean water program which only addresses a small part of the issue.

Water Pollution
Water Pollution
• Water pollution occurs when dangerous substances, most
commonly chemicals or microbes, enter a stream, river, lake,
ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, decreasing water quality
and making it poisonous to humans or the environment.

• In the utterances of the World Health Organization (WHO),

polluted water is the water whose structure has been tampered
with to the point where it is no longer suitable for human
consumption. It results in a toxic substance that cannot be
consumed and used for fundamental reasons such as agriculture
activities. It also provokes autoimmune reactions such as cholera,
dysentery, typhoid, and poliomyelitis, which decapitate over
500,000 individuals worldwide each year.
THREATS OF WATER POLLUTION
Contaminated waters include microbes, pathogens, and parasites. They also include
fertilizers and pesticides.
Even so, human acts and their consequences are the most common effect of
substandard water quality.

Deforestation
may deprive waterways and
generates organic waste,
which may shelter harmful
microorganisms.
Agriculture, industry, and
animal farming
Chemical runoff from these
production affects water
pollutants.

Global Warming
Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)
raise global average temperature,
heating water and reducing oxygen
saturation.

Water Pollution Effects
Worsening water effectiveness harms the
environment, human health, and the global
economy. President David Malpass of the
World Bank warned of the economic
implications of deteriorating water quality:
“Worsening water effectiveness is
suffocating economic growth and rising
inequities in many nations.” When the
concentration of dissolved oxygen — the
indicator used to regulate organic pollution of
water bodies — rises above a specific limit,
the development of regions within related
catchment basins is limited by one-third, as
shown in the explanation provided. Also listed
shown are some other repercussions of this
decision.
1. Contamination of the food
chain
2. Destruction of biodiversity
3. Lack of potable water
4. Disease
5. Infant mortality
