ROTARY
Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service,
encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.
Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and
geographical areas. Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and
professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious,
and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.
The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is a not-for-profit corporation that promotes world
understanding through international humanitarian service programs and educational and cultural
exchanges. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians who share its vision of a better
world.

Rotary International is governed by a board of directors composed of 17 zone directors, a President-Elect

and an international president. The nomination and the election of the president are based on zones. The
Rotary International President, the highest officer of the organization, is elected for a term of one year. The
Board meets quarterly to establish policies. The RI Board of Directors is the administrative body of Rotary
International. Its members include the RI president, president-elect, vice president, treasurer, and the
Rotary general secretary. Directors are nominated by Rotary clubs and elected to two-year terms at the RI
Convention.

There are 28 districts in India which are now under zone five and six. Zone five consists of 17 districts of
India, one joint district of India and Nepal and the only district in Pakistan.
HISTORY OF ROTARY
Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had
felt in the small towns of his youth, formed the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois,
USA, on 23 February 1905. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among
members' offices.
Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered
from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the
organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.
As it approached the dawn of the 21st century, Rotary worked to meet the changing needs of society,
expanding its service effort to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world
hunger, and children at risk. The organization admitted women for the first time (worldwide) in 1989. It
started off with an enactment to delete the word male from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution is
proposed by a Rotary club in India for the Council on Legislation meeting at the 1950 RI Convention. In June
2011, there were 197,044 female Rotarians worldwide and 91 women were district governors.
Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed
or re-established throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The first Asian to become R.I. President from Asia
was Nitish Laharry (1962-63) from Calcutta. We had to wait another thirty years for another Indian to be
elected as R.I. President. In 1991-92 Rajendra K.Saboo (Raja Saboo) from Chandigarh had the rare
opportunity of leading the world's leading service organisation. Raja Saboo also served as the Chairman of
The Rotary Foundation (1996-97), the only Indian to hold the position in Rotary's history. Rtn. Kalyan
Banerjee recreated history as he was the R.I. President in 2011-12 and served as the Chairman of the Rotary
Foundation in 2016-17.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

In August 1910, Rotarians gathered in Chicago for their first national convention. The existing 16 clubs
unified as the National Association of Rotary Clubs and elected Rotary founder Paul P. Harris as the
organization’s first president. Harris served two terms – the only president to do so.
The presidents of Rotary International are elected for one-year terms and must have served as a club
president, district governor, and member of the R.I. Board of Directors. In addition to leadership
experience, R.I. Presidents bring a commitment to Service Above Self as well as the culture and pride of
their home club and region. Rotasia in 2016 happened at Chandigarh & Convention at Atlanta.

FOUR AVENUES OF SERVICE

Based on the Object of Rotary, the Four Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical cornerstone and the
foundation on which club activity is based:

● Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
● Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
● International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary's humanitarian reach around the globe
and to promote world understanding and peace.
● Vocational Service (Professional Development) encourages Rotarians to serve others through their
vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
PAUL HARRIS FELLOW
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have
contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what
was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the
precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Many notable figures have been named as Paul Harris
Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James
Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk.

THE FOUR WAY TEST

The Four-Way Test was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president)
when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.
This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for
sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the
company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been
translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the
following four questions:

"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
FURTHER EXPLANATION:

1. Is it TRUTH? There is timelessness in truth that is unchangeable. Truth cannot exist without
justice.

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? The substitution of fairness for the harsh principles of doing
business at arm's length has improved rather than hurt business relationships.

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Man is by nature a co-operative creature
and it is his natural instinct to express love.

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? This question eliminates the dog-eat-dog principle and
substitutes the idea of constructive & creative competition.

ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY

The Rotary Club of Bombay is one of the pioneers in India of the Rotary movement, devoted to the
ideal of Fellowship through service. It was founded on March 19, 1929. The Club meets every Tuesday
at 1:15P.M. at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the very place where the founders had their first get-
together. The first president of the club was Rtn. Charles N. Moberley. Most clubs in Dist 3140 can
trace their roots to the Rotary Club of Bombay. Sir Phiroze Sethna, one of India's most illustrious sons,
was the only Indian among the other European founder members and the first Board consisted of only
eight members.

This Club has inspired the incorporation of 26 Interact clubs, with about 750 school children as
members, and six Rotaract clubs with a membership of about 200 college students. There is also a very
active Inner Wheel Club.

ROTARACT
Rotaract stands for “Rotary in Action”. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and
women ages 18 to 30 (in case of institute-based clubs, the age is 16-30). Rotaract clubs are usually
community-based or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true
"partners in service" and key members of the Rotary family.
As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 9,500
Rotaract clubs in some 178 countries/geographic areas in 525 districts, Rotaract has become a
worldwide phenomenon.
Rotaractors also often spearhead the formation of Interact clubs and participate in Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards. Rotaractors also can go on to become Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study
Exchange team members.

HISTORY OF ROTARACT
Rotaract has evolved quickly in its short but dynamic history. In the early 1960s, Rotary clubs around
the world began to sponsor university youth groups as community service projects. The 1967-68 RI
president, Luther H. Hodges, and the RI Board of Directors considered this club activity to have
international relevance, and Rotaract was approved in 1968 as an official program for Rotary clubs.
The first club chartered was the Rotaract Club of North Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, on 13 March
1968. The decision to adopt the program came at a time when student protests worldwide were of
growing concern to Rotarians. Rotaract was the means of challenging the energies of the young adults
into positive activities that could benefit their community. Rotaract originally began as a Rotary
International youth programme. Today it continues to experience its phenomenal growth. There are
currently more that 9,500 Rotaract Clubs spread over 178 countries, with an estimated membership
of more than 219,000 Rotaractors. The program continues to grow making it a true global movement
with motto of ‘Self Development through Service and Fellowship'.

PURPOSE AND GOALS

The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the
knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social
needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a
framework of friendship and service.

The goals of Rotaract are:

● To develop professional and leadership skills.

● To emphasize respect for the rights of others, based on the recognition of the worth of each
individual;
● To recognize the dignity and value of all useful occupations and opportunities to serve;
● To recognize, practice and promote ethical standards as leadership qualities and vocational
responsibilities;
● To develop knowledge and understanding of the needs, problems and opportunities in the
community and worldwide;
● To provide opportunities for personal and group activities to serve the community and
promote international understanding and goodwill toward all people.
THE R.I. DISTRICT 3140 & EVOLUTION OF 3141
Rotaract came to India in 1968 with Rotaract Club of Secundarabad being chartered on 2nd April 1968.
Rotaract Club of Ambarnath became the first club to be chartered in R I District 3140 (then R I District
314) on August 6, 1968. The district has grown leaps and bounds since then and today the district
boasts of over 100 active clubs spanning the revenue districts of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai,
covering areas from CST to Badlapur, Bhiwandi to Shahapur, Churchgate to Dahanu and Navi Mumbai.
Initially named District 314, it was re-christened as District 3140 in the year 91-92 with Rtr. Kumar Iyer
as the first DRR for the newly nomenclature District. The Rotaract Movement in RI District 3140 is one
of the most active youth movements in and around South East Asia. From the year 2016-17, Rotaract
District 3140 split into R.I. District 3141 and R.I. District 3142.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR
An elected Rotarian, who serves as an officer of RI and represents the RI Board of Directors in the field,
leads each of the more than 500 Rotary districts worldwide. The District Governor appoints a District
Rotaract Chair and the District Rotaract Committee (comprised of Rotarians) to address this issue. This
committee works to organize new Rotaract clubs in the district, increase communication among
Rotaract clubs, and plan district wide training for Rotaract club officers. The District Governor for 2021-
22 is Rtn. Rajendra Agarwal.

DISTRICT ROTARACT REPRESENTATIVE

The District Rotaract Representative is a Rotaractor elected by the Rotaract clubs in the district. A
Rotaractor must complete one year as a Rotaract club president or as a member of the Rotaract district
committee, which is comprised of Rotaractors, before serving as district Rotaract representative. In
districts with only one Rotaract club, the district Rotaract representative is the most recent, available
past Rotaract club president or current president if the club is recently organized. The District Rotaract
representative serves as a liaison between the Rotaract clubs and the District Rotaract Committee
(comprised of Rotarians) and Rotary International. The District Rotaract Representative should provide
the district and RI World Headquarters with reports of exceptional club projects for international
promotion. Rotaract clubs can help the District Rotaract Representative strengthen the district
communication network by providing regular updates on new club officers and address changes.

WORLD ROTARACT WEEK

Several developments in the early 1990s helped strengthen the Rotaract movement. In February 1991,
the first Rotaract club in Eastern Europe was chartered in Budapest, Hungary, with the help of Austrian
Rotaractors. In March 1992, the RI Board established World Rotaract Week, which is celebrated
annually during the week of 13 March to commemorate the chartering of the first Rotaract club.
During World Rotaract Week, Rotaractors attend meetings with their sponsoring Rotary clubs,
undertake joint service projects, and speak with clubs that do not sponsor Rotaract clubs about the
benefits of the program. During the week of 13 March, Rotaract clubs and their sponsors join in a
celebration of World Rotaract Week, commemorating the date on which Rotary International officially
certified the first Rotaract club. Those who participate receive recognition from Rotary International.

INTERACT
Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are
sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-
governing and self-supporting.
Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw
from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community.
Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers
international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of
friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of
● Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
● Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
● Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
● Advancing international understanding and goodwill
As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than
10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide
phenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.

H.R. College
R.C.H.R. cannot exist without H.R. College. The college is an integral part of what we do and is
essential to our functioning.
In recent years, relations with college authorities have become of utmost importance to the
working of R.C.H.R. Some of the important people to keep in mind are:
Teacher-in-Charge – Prof. Niren Mehta
Registrar & Treasurer – Mrs. Ragini
Principal Inc.- Prof. Pooja Ramchandani

ORGANISING A ROTARACT CLUB

Rotary clubs should fully understand the Rotaract program before considering sponsorship of a new
Rotaract club. Rotaract, like Rotary, is diverse, and each club has its own unique qualities.

GETTING STARTED
Once you have a feel for the program and the types of young people who would be attracted to a
Rotaract club, you are ready to plan your strategy for starting a new club. There are two types of
Rotaract clubs to consider: community based clubs and university-based clubs. In community-based
clubs, all members of the community ages 18-30 are potential candidates for membership. A Rotarian
from the sponsoring Rotary club should be appointed to serve as the primary adviser for the newly
forming Rotaract club once the organizers have decided that a community-based club is preferred.
University-based clubs also consist of members from ages 18 to 30, but they must be enrolled in
university courses (Rotaract clubs established at colleges would be considered university-based).
Those who wish to organize a university-based Rotaract club should work closely with the university
administration, explaining the purpose and goals of both Rotary and Rotaract. It is important to stress
that Rotary intends to comply with school regulations regarding student organizations. If university
administrators and the Rotaract club organizers determine that a university-based club would be
mutually beneficial, then the Rotaract club organizers should find a member of the faculty to serve as
an adviser to the club. The faculty adviser must be willing to work closely with the students in a non
classroom setting and should be generally well liked by students. The faculty adviser should also work
with an adviser from the sponsoring Rotary club and the Rotaract club organizers to develop a
recruitment strategy to attract members to the new club.

HOLDING AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING

Once you have identified the membership base, your Rotary club is ready to convene an informational
meeting for prospective members. Open-ended discussion at this meeting should give the Rotaract
club organizers a good gauge of the interests of potential Rotaractors. Do they want to serve their
community, polish their leadership skills, advance professionally, make friends and develop
international contacts? Once you have a sense of what excites the prospective members, you can best
explain how a Rotaract club can help meet their interests, whether it be through service activities,
professional development seminars, partnership with Rotary, or club, regional, and international
events. By letting potential Rotaractors know some of the many opportunities available through
Rotaract, you can help them begin to chart their own course. You may wish to consider the following
ideas for an informal meeting:
● Invite a Rotarian from the sponsoring Rotary club to provide welcoming remarks and a brief
explanation of Rotary.
● Invite a Rotaractor (District Rotaract Representative or Rotaract Club Officer) to explain Rotaract’s
purpose, goals, and activities, as well as member attendance and participation requirements.
● Gather information on those interested in becoming members. Consider using the Rotaract
Membership Application

HOLDING ORGANIZATIONAL MEETINGS

Once prospective Rotaractors have demonstrated interest, you can begin working with them to
organize and plan activities. To maintain a high level of enthusiasm in your core membership pool, you
may want to space organizational meetings no more than two weeks apart. Be sure to keep a record
of the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of those who attend so that you
can invite them to future meetings. Always encourage them to invite their friends as well to expand
your charter membership base. There are no requirements for the number of meetings to be held prior
to a Rotaract club’s official certification. Each club’s development is unique. However, during the
organizational phase, you will need to
● Identify potential club leaders and hold elections for president, vice president, secretary, treasurer,
and members of the board of directors. Provide them with the information about the roles and
responsibilities of club officers,
● Discuss and establish annual club dues
● Determine meeting place and time (clubs are required to meet at least twice a month)
CHARTERING A ROTARACT CLUB
When a prospective Rotaract club has achieved a strong base of members, it should be ready to
proceed with applying for official RI certification. A minimum of 15 charter members is recommended.
In accordance with the Rotaract Statement of Policy, the prospective club should first adopt the
Standard Rotaract Club Constitution and all its amendments. It should also adopt bylaws consistent
with the Standard Rotaract Club Constitution established by Rotary International. These bylaws are
subject to the approval of the sponsoring Rotary club. The Rotaract Club Organization List should then
be filled out listing all charter members who have committed to attending a minimum of 60 percent
of the club’s service and social activities. The completed list must be signed by the sponsoring Rotary
club president and the district governor and sent with US$50 to RI World Headquarters or the
international office serving your area. In some cases, payment may be made in local currency via an RI
fiscal agent. Please consult your sponsoring Rotary club or the RI Official Directory for a list of
authorized fiscal agents.
Upon certification of the Rotaract club, the sponsoring Rotary club will receive a certificate that can be
presented to the newly formed Rotaract club. Follow-up materials are also sent, including the
Worldwide Rotaract Directory and information about RI resources available to assist with club service
projects.

ROTARACT CLUB CHARTERING CHECKLIST

● Adopt Standard Rotaract Club Constitution
● Complete Rotaract Club Organization List
● Have organization list signed by sponsoring Rotary club president and district governor
● Send list to RI World Headquarters or local international office with US$50 charter fee

INAUGRAL CEREMONY
The inaugural ceremony marks the official certification of the Rotaract club by Rotary International.
The Rotary club sponsor(s) may wish to plan and host an inaugural ceremony welcoming new
Rotaractors as partners in Rotary service. Each ceremony is unique and has no set format. You might
wish to invite district leaders such as the district governor, District Rotaract Chair, and District Rotaract
Representative to this celebration to help establish the presence of the new Rotaract club in the
district.
INSTALLATION CEREMONY
Another special moment for your new Rotaract club will be the installation of club officers. An officer
installation can be a ceremonious occasion or a gala at which the new club officers are officially
recognized as the club’s leadership for the year. After the inaugural year, the annual installation
ceremony is held to thank the past officers for their year of dedicated work and to greet new officers
for the year to come. The incoming president and officers of the sponsoring Rotary club should be
invited to this event so they can get acquainted with the new Rotaract club officers. This can increase
communication between Rotaract and Rotary clubs and strengthen joint projects and activities.

Congratulations! You've reached the end. So many pages later, do you feel like you know
