- In the picture as you can see poverty garbage in the ocean or pollution and the World
War II. Poverty is one of the problems in Philippines but a low income is a major cause
of poverty. If you are earning a low income, you will not be able to save money and
invest it in order to increase your wealth. Moreover, in countries with a quite low income,
people will often not be able to provide for basic needs like enough food or for the
treatment of diseases. But you can have solution in this problem like do as much as you
can and what you can help with money or food so that they can live their day. Pollution
the wastes that are dumped into the oceans tend to have toxic substances, which soak in
all the oceanic oxygen. This leads to a marked depletion of oxygen available to mammals
and other fishes causing them to die in their natural habitat. World War II in the
Philippines is important to the story because Eddie served in the war there when he was
younger. This is the place where Eddie was taken prisoner for months, and where he got
his knee injury that altered his life forever. This also the scene of two of the lessons that
Eddie learns while in heaven. One from his captain during the war and the other from
Tala, the little Filipino girl he killed in a fire. Eddie was a changed person after he
returned from the war mainly embittered about the loss of complete use of his knee.

ACTIVITY 3
From the readings and activities undertaken, let us know your perspective on the topics discussed. Write
an essay be on what could your role in nation building and UST-Legazpi’s formation program? Discuss
thoroughly for 5-10 words.
- The youth is important because they will be our future. Today they might be our partners,
tomorrow they will go on to become leaders. The youths are very energetic and
enthusiastic. They have the ability to learn and adapt to the environment. Similarly, they
are willing to learn and act on it as well to achieve their goals. Our youth can bring social
reform and improvement in society. We cannot make do without the youth of a country.
Furthermore, the nation requires their participation to achieve the goals and help in taking
the country towards progress. Likewise, we see how the development of any country
requires active participation from the youth. It does not matter which field we want to
progress in, whether it is the technical field or sports field, youth is needed. It is up to us
how to help the youth in playing this role properly. We must make all the youth aware of
their power and the role they have to play in nation-building.
