Intercultural Communication Midterm Test

Student’s name: Than Thi Ha Nhi

Student’s ID: 4501751179
Class: ENGL142501 – Tuesday morning

Question 1: (6 pts) From the point of view of a student from the Intercultural Communication
class, share your opinions on the following picture:
- Describe what is happening.
- What could be the causes of this and suggest some sensible ways to deal with it.

It can be obviously seen that the picture involves two women from two different
cultures. They are walking past each other and judging each other on how they dress. The
woman on the left side of the painting is a young blonde woman. She is wearing nothing but a
bikini, heels, sunglasses, and some jewelry. The woman on the right side is fully clothed from
head to toe in a black gown and head piece except her eyes. Yet in their emphasized bubbles,
both are saying nearly the same thing: “What a cruel male-dominated culture!”. Both women
believe that the only way the other woman is dressed is because that is how the males in their
culture expect or like women to dress.
Living in different cultures with different customs, standards, social mores, and thought
patterns has created this contradictory situation. Western women and Muslim women have
different cultural and historical backgrounds, instilling different values and interests. These
differences have influenced what women in each country aspire to and has created two
different expressions of how to dress. The blonde woman must have thought that women who
wear hijab – or similar body coverings – are necessarily oppressed and have been coerced into
it. Meanwhile, the woman in black gown has a different thought that Western women must
wear sexy clothes to attract men’s attention.
The way people dress is based on their choices and preferences, as well as how they
respect and are proud of their culture and religion. Therefore, the best way to deal with this
misconception is to acknowledge the other’s culture and religion and to respect, accept and
adapt to this difference in culture. “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to
recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” - Audre Lorde.
Question 2: (4 pts) What is the most interesting thing you have learned from the IC class?
Why? (Your answer must not exceed 250 words)

Honestly, I love IC class because it has brought me many things and changed me a lot.
The best thing I have learned from this class would be knowledge, skills, understanding
and empathy.
As a student majoring in Business English, I will have the opportunity to interact with
many people from many different cultures. Intercultural communication requires an
understanding that different cultures have different customs, standards, social mores, and even
thought patterns. Therefore, having difficulties in communication is inevitable if I do not have
any cultural knowledge of their countries. IC class has helped me broaden my knowledge of
those things as well as learn how to deal with problems in a sensitive way.
Through the lessons, I learned how to respect, accept, and adapt to the differences in
culture. This class has also given me the opportunity to work with the great teammates. From
strangers with different ways of thinking, we became “a mini intercultural team”, helping
others to complete assigned learning tasks, correcting others’ mistakes and cheering others on.
That is how I called it understanding and empathy.
In addition, during the learning process, the lecturer was also very attentive and imparted
knowledge in an interesting and understandable way. The lecturer also told us many interesting
stories and gave us many useful advice.
In short, I am lucky to have the opportunity to learn many things from IC class. I will
memorize and apply these lessons to study, work, and daily life to become a good intercultural
communicator.
