What is the importance of Working Drawings?

ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
Working drawings have traditionally been two-dimensional orthogonal projections of the building or component being described, such as plans, sections, and
elevations. These can be hand-drawn to scale or created with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
Building information modeling (BIM) is increasingly being used to create three-dimensional models of buildings and their components for construction. This is
known as a virtual construction model (VCM), and it can include a number of different models created by various members of the project team.
Title blocks, dimensions, notation, and symbols may be included in working drawings. It is critical that these adhere to industry standards so that their specific
meaning is clear and understandable. Specification information can be included on working drawings or in a separate specification, although information should
not be duplicated since this can lead to inconsistency and confusion.
The scale at which drawings are made should match the level of detail required to convey the information. Different line thicknesses can be utilized to improve
clarity for specific parts.
It is critical to consider the objective of the drawings as well as the people who will utilize them. Working drawings may be generated for statutory approvals,
contractors to plan construction works, offer instructions on site, component procurement, shop drawing preparation, subcontractor appointment, and so on.
Drawings must be carefully designed so that they provide the necessary information to carry out specific aspects of the work. They may be divided into
packages to provide greater clarity, so that information is especially customized to discrete areas of the works, specific components, or individual suppliers or
trades.
Some packages may need to be produced sooner than others, for example, switchgear, chiller units, lifts, escalators, or bespoke cladding systems, or for front-
end construction such as service diversions, demolition, setting out details, subsurface drainage, piling, and groundworks.
The accuracy of production information is critical. There will be disagreements and delays on site if it is not adequately organized and coordinated, and
expenditures will be incurred. The following are some of the most common issues with working drawings:
Poor coordination of information.
ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
The responsibility for preparing production information will be determined by the procurement system and contract type chosen. Production information may be
created by a consulting team working for the customer under traditional contracts (as well as management contracts and construction management contracts).
Some production information may be produced by specialist contractors under the supervision of the principal designer. In other types of contracts, such as
design and build, the principal contractor may be responsible for preparing and coordinating production information.
When the work is completed, the working drawings may be revised to display ‘as constructed' information, indicating changes to the works that may have
occurred throughout the construction process.
Working drawings that have been meticulously produced can be very attractive, and the best of them have been displayed as works of art.

Types of Building Drawings, Proposed Drawing, Submission Drawing and Completion Drawing :
A. Site Plan - is a scaled design that depicts the current state of your land as well as suggested improvements. It encompasses any existing and
prospective development, such as structures, paving, and land usage.
ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
B. Floor Plan - is a scale drawing that depicts the relationships between rooms, spaces, traffic patterns, and other physical characteristics at one level of a
structure from above.
ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
Foundation Plan is a plan view drawing, in section, showing the location and size of footings, piers, columns, foundation walls, and supporting
beams. A foundation plan ordinarily includes the following: • Footings for foundation walls, piers, and columns (hidden lines).
ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
Floor Framing Plans include structural details such joist position, spacing, and orientation, as well as floor heights and stair openings. There are
usually multiple call-outs (notes) indicating the sort of floor trusses required, as well as information about truss supports and support locations.
ES 111.1 – ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS, LAB.
All Floor Framing Plans are for design purposes only and must be reviewed by an engineer and/or truss designer to ensure adherence to local
site conditions and allowing for given structural loads based on your climate and roofing materials.
D. Roof Framing Plan - A roof plan depicts the shape of the roof. The roof framing plan is similar to the roof plan, but it additionally indicates the size and
direction of the framing members used to frame the roof in addition to the geometry of the structure and the outline of the roof.
