General Mathematics - Module #2

This document provides a weekly home learning plan for a Grade 11 General Mathematics class. It includes learning areas, competencies, and tasks to be completed for each day of the week. Specifically, it focuses on rational functions, equations, and inequalities. It defines these terms and provides examples to distinguish between them. It also provides instructions on how to solve rational equations by eliminating the denominator through finding the least common denominator. Students are assigned reading materials and practice problems to complete for the week related to these topics.

RATIONAL FUNCTION
Learning Competencies:

✓ distinguish rational function, equation, and inequality

✓ solve rational equation
✓ solve rational inequality

𝑝(𝑥)
▪ RATIONAL FUNCTION – a function of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials and q(x) ≠ 0.
𝑞(𝑥)
– is the ratio of two polynomials. It involves rational expressions, two variables, and an
equal sign.
▪ RATIONAL EQUATION – an equation containing rational expressions. It involves only one variable and an equal
sign.
▪ RATIONAL INEQUALITY – an inequality containing rational expression. It involves one variable and one
inequality symbol.

by definition:

Example 1. Is 𝑓(𝑥) = + a rational function, equation, or inequality?
𝑥 4

𝑝(𝑥)
Solution: RATIONAL FUNCTION, since the given is of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = and contains an equal sign and variables
𝑞(𝑥)
x and f(x) (or y).
𝑥−12 𝑥−4
Example 2. Is = a rational function, equation, or inequality?
𝑥+2 𝑥−5

Solution: RATIONAL EQUATION, since the given has rational expression on both sides with only one variable and
contains an equality symbol.
𝑥−1 1
Example 3. Is > a rational function, equation, or inequality?
𝑥+3 4

Solution: RATIONAL INEQUALITY, since the given has rational expressions on both side and an inequality symbol.
2
𝑥3 1
Example 4. Is = a rational function, equation, or inequality?
𝑥−2 4

Solution: NEITHER, although the given contains an equal sign and only one variable (x), the expression is neither a
rational function, equation, nor an inequality because the variable x has a fractional exponent. It means that the numerator
is not a polynomial which violates the definition of rational expression.

▪ SOLUTION – a number or value that satisfies a rational equation; a value that makes the rational equation true.
o Extraneous Solution - a solution that emerges from the process of solving the problem but is not a valid
solution to the problem.

How to determine the solution/s of a rational equation?

i. Eliminate the denominator by multiplying each term of the equation by the least common denominator.
ii. Solve the resulting equation.
iii. Check the solution/s with the original equation.

▪ SOLUTION SET – set of values that makes an inequality true.

▪ CRITICAL VALUE – values of x which render the numerator and the denominator equal to zero.

How to determine the solution set of a rational inequality?

i. Rewrite the inequality as a single rational expression on one side of the inequality symbol and 0 on the other
side.
ii. Find the critical numbers and partition the x – axis into intervals based on the critical numbers.
iii. Pick a test point in each interval and evaluate the numerator and denominator, perform sign analysis.
iv. Write the solution set.
