Ch. 1: Transfer Skills (Caregiver College Video Series)

Populations are ageing around the world and with age people are more
likely to have chronic illness and atypical presentation of acute illnesses, all
contributing to the complexity of their healthcare needs. Personally, I would
say that every day is a new day and with a new day we all are aging and
learning how to embrace change. In my perspective, it is a blessing already if
we reach a certain age in todays generation. So it is really important for us to
take good care of our health and well-being to enhance longevity of life and so
we can experience more from this lifetime together with our loved ones. This
reflective essay will be about my insights of my experience with elderlies and
the importance of learning geriatric procedures to hone my nursing skills.

Based on the video that we watched, I have contemplated that there is a

growing recognition that students training to provide care for older adults need
to be improved in all settings where older adults receive care. I chose this
specific video because I wanted to learn more about practical geriatric
procedures to assist elderly. Since, I didn’t got the chance to take care of my
direct grandparents as they passed away sooner when I was little. It has been
my passion to care for others specially to the people who are dear to me. On
the positive side, I have always wanted to experience to take care for the
elderly even though it needs dedication and commitment to pursue that job.
Moreover, the desired outcome should be an attitude change toward seniors.
We, nursing students must go to both long term care facilities and to healthy
aging sites to extend our help to our geriatric patients.

Ever since, helping people always brings a good feeling to me. Seeing
their face go from unhappy & lonely, to their face lighting up with happiness
really makes me feel fulfilled and joyful. That’s why helping out with the elderly
was such a dream of mine so I can feel what it feels like to assist my beloved
grandparents. Through watching that video, it gave me personally a better
idea of how to treat my family when they get older and to show them pure love
and tender care that they deserve. I aspire to continue to get that feeling
throughout life as I help mankind and pursue that rewarding feeling everyday
at work. I really hope I affect my future patients lives because I know they will
touch mine as well. Having people who actually care about the elderly is such
a good thing ,but it’s rare. I know that it needs extra effort and patience to
assist elderly as they are vulnerable and helpless but the outcome of all my
hardwork is what I am after for.

With that being said, I think just knowing I was a help to them was enough
for me. People always say that elderly are incapable of almost everything. In
my personal opinion, I believe the elderly are so much more capable than
everybody else because they have so much more knowledge and experience
than us. Maybe they aren’t more capable physically, but in many other ways
they really exceed everyone else’s capability. Additionally, they all have
different personas and personalities they portray so we must be resilient and
understanding enough to meet their concerns and needs. Ever since I started
learning more about older people it has made me appreciate life more and it
makes me want to do everything I can to prepare for my future for when I age.

In conclusion, I believe that volunteer work for the elderly can really help
the community because it allows people to get more involved and discover
other problems that they didn’t know existed before; that way they can help fix
the problems and the community would be a much happier place to live in. I
have also came to the realization that life is too short so we should do things
that will make our soul happy and live life to the fullest. Our time here are just
borrowed, so we should spend more time to the special people in our lives
and show them how much they mean to us. As a student nurse, we mut be in
an excellent position to help patients follow medical recommendations by
providing information, considering patients‘ individual needs, building an
awareness of community services that can help lessen social isolation, and
helping them maintain their independence is the least that we can offer
towards longevity of the geriatric community.
