Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background

I. Background of the Study

The environment we live in is very important, and affects our lives
directly. Man is said to be the product of his environment. Environmental
issues are a global concern. There really is no end to it. Worldwide; efforts
are being made to increase awareness about environmental protection.
Improper management of solid waste disposal is one of the principal causes
of environmental degradation. It is a major contributor to pollution and
disease outbreak in many parts of the world. There is no permanent
solution to environmental problems, it is only through proper awareness and
practice that we might reduce and control waste generation. Most important
in this matter is proper management of the generated waste. Waste
management is a science that deals with the logistics, environmental impact,
social responsibility and impacts of waste disposal by an organization.
Solid Waste Management (SWM) has 3 basic components for collecting
transporting and disposing of waste. Comprehensive solid waste
management includes a variety of activities including reduction, recycling,
segregation, modification treatment and disposal which range in
sophistication.
For developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas,
and for residential and industrial producers, waste management
practices can differ. Handling residential and institutional non-
hazardous waste in metropolitan areas is typically the responsibility of
local government, while handling non-hazardous commercial and
industrial waste is the responsibility of the utility subject to state,
national or international controls.
According to Saungweme and World Bank (2012), the World Bank reports
that 20-50% of budgets are directed towards solid waste management in
developing countries, while 30-60 % of the waste is not collected. That's an
indication that the financial resources channeled are not being utilized
effectively.
In this research, this should attempt to know how far the homeowners
and barangay officials are aware of and practicing proper waste
management.

availability of implementation of proper waste disposal and management in
the Landmass Park Subdivision of Biga, Tanza, Cavite.

1.2 If they use curbside disposal service for the items go to the
transfer stations.
1.3 If the frequency of Solid Waste Collection and Transportation to
residents of the Landmass Park Subdivision.
2. The availability of Barangay Officials to implement the proper waste
collection and disposal to their area.

3. The availability of equipment and materials used for collection of garbage.

III. Significance of the Study

implementation of proper waste disposal and management in the Landmass
Park Subdivision of Biga, Tanza, Cavite. The data that will be gathered will
be significant for the following beneficiaries of this study:

community to take responsibility for their waste. This study will also help
them to how they contribute to the environment even in small actions like
this.
The Barangay Officials. This study would help the officials to know the
ordinance they implement when it comes to proper wastes management. To
provoke them to promote and educate their residents in a proper garbage
disposal.
Future researchers. The researchers of this study would help future
researchers as the basis of their study and additional literature for their
future investigations. This will serve as their basis to understand their topic
and guide them with the ideas of the current researchers.

IV. Assumptions of the Study
The researchers assume that this study will be able to help the
residents and barangay officials to be aware of the serious consequences of
improper practices in garbage disposal. The researchers expect this study
will encourage, promote and enlighten the residents and Barangay officials
of wastes management on Landmass Park Subdivision.
To conclude this result, the researchers will be needing a large amount
of money to produce the materials needed in this study, such as printing
questionnaires, hard copies and money for transportation that will be used
to get the information needed in this study. All expenses came from the
share allowance of the researchers. The researchers will have a difficulty in
entering the barangay hall and home owner’s association premises, to
submit the permission letter to survey their area, but as they finish the
process, the researchers are hoping to have an effortless data gathering,
and obtain information by providing a survey and questionnaire.
Scope and Limitation
The focus of this study is to determine the how far the awareness and
availability of homeowners and Barangay official in implementing the proper
waste disposal and management. The data collection will be conducted to
111 selected residents in the Landmass Park Subdivision Barangay Biga. The
remaining homeowner in the subdivision which do not fall as part of 111
selected residents are not within the scope of this research. The study would
be done using questionnaire to the participants as a survey and reference of
primary data. In this strategy, the researchers will be able to gather
information, to analyze and interpreting the awareness and availability of
implementation of proper waste disposal and management to the Landmass
Park Subdivision.
