Timelines on the development of e-commerce

- 1979: Michael Aldrich invented online shopping.

- 1984: Gateshead SIS/Tesco is the first B2C online shopping site and Mrs.
Snowball, 72 years old, is the first online customer. In April 1984, CompuServe
launched Electronic Shopping Centers in the US and Canada. It is the first
comprehensive e-commerce service.

- 1990: Tim Berners-Lee builds the first browser, WorldWideWeb, using the NeXT
machine.

- 1992: Terry Brownell launches online shop Bulletin board system using
RoboBOARD/FX.

- 1994: Netscape launched the Navigator browser in October with Mozilla. Pizza
Hut order on this site. First online banking opened. Some efforts aim to offer fresh
flower delivery and online magazine subscriptions. "Adult" devices are also
available, such as cars and bicycles. Netscape 1.0 was introduced in late 1994, the
SSL encryption protocol makes transactions more secure.

- 1995: Jeff Bezos launches Amazon.com and 24-hour free commerce, Internet
radio, Radio HK, and the Net Radio star broadcast. Dell and Cisco began to
actively use the Internet for commercial transactions. eBay was founded by
computer programmer Pierre Omidyar as AuctionWeb.

- 1998: Alibaba Group was formed in China.

- 2000: The dot-com boom.

- 2001: Alibaba.com reached profitability in December 2001.

- 2002: eBay acquires PayPal for $1.5 billion.

- 2003: Opened iTunes store


- 2004: Credit card security was born

- 2005: Youtube was born

- 2012: US e-commerce and online retail sales are expected to reach $226 billion,
up 12% compared to 2011.

2. The development of e-commerce in the world today

2.1 Overview of e-commerce development in the world in recent years

- Up to the present time, the e-commerce industry has grown by up to 32%


according to the WB. In the future, e-commerce will develop even more.

- Online sales now contribute to 40% of global FMCG growth.

- It is forecasted that by 2025, the e-commerce industry will account for 10% of the
total spending of FMCG globally.

- The world is increasingly exploding on computer networks, everyone can access


the Internet. People communicate and connect with each other easily just the
Internet. This is the reason why e-commerce services in the world are growing
stronger and stronger.

- Thanks to e-commerce, the shopping process becomes easy, no longer barriers of


distance and time.

- The line between “conventional” and “electronic” commerce becomes more


blurred as businesses move parts of their businesses to the Internet.

- Thanks to e-commerce, customers can shop cheaper, faster and more


conveniently.

2.2 Top e-commerce development websites in the world


- Amazon: is one of the largest e-commerce websites in the world, Amazon is
present everywhere and has its headquarters located in the US. This website was
born in 1994 and went online in 1995, so far Amazon is still the leading name in
retail sales in the US. People love shopping on this site because simple interface,
easy payment, many different payment methods, regular discounts and great offers.

- Alibaba: the big 2 holding market share in e-commerce websites, is an e-


commerce site from China founded by Jack Ma in 1999. From around 2010,
Alibaba started to develop on a global scale. The demand and trend that this
website wants to target is similar to the Google search page but specializes in the
export business.

- Ebay: is the world's leading e-commerce site which is considered as a giant


online marketplace. It is a place to gather and sell a lot of items and products from
all over the world. Ebay connects freelancers and buyers with direct purchases or
auctions. The most special feature of Ebay is a website that allows you to buy
products in the form of auctions. However, if you want to buy goods on ebay, you
need to have an international payment card as Visa/Master Card, Paypal to pay.

3. The development of e-commerce in Vietnam at the moment

3.1 Overview of Vietnam's e-commerce development in recent years

- Vietnam's e-commerce growth rate is estimated to increase rapidly at about 27%.


And e-commerce sites in Vietnam mainly operate on the B2C model.

- E-commerce websites are springing up more and more. Foreign investment funds
also invest a lot in Vietnam's e-commerce website.

- The number of Internet users is increasing, accounting for 40 million people, of


which about 30% buy goods through the Internet.
- Buyers have quick access to a rich and diverse source of goods, and have many
shopping choices for themselves.

- The explosion of e-commerce through social networks such as Facebook, Zalo is


increasing day by day. Sellers live stream on Facebook and the number of buyers
there accounts for 70%. Thereby showing that Vietnam spends a lot of time on
social networks and is interested in shopping here.

- Payment method of e-commerce activities in Vietnam gradually changed from


payment on receipt to payment by e-wallet such as: ShopeePay, Momo, Zalopay, ...
or by Internet Banking.

3.2 Some of e-commerce development websites in Vietnam

- Shopee: a name that is extremely familiar to young people today, entering


Vietnam's e-commerce market since 2016, Shopee has quickly become one of the
largest e-commerce floors in Vietnam thanks to advantages such as: variety of
products, customers are young people, accept to sell at the most competitive prices.
Communication and image promotion programs achieved high efficiency thanks to
TVCs becoming viral trends on social networks.

- Lazada: established in 2012, is part of Lazada Group of Alibaba group, is an


online shopping and selling address with a wide range of products in many fields.

- Tiki: was established in 2010, at first, Tiki was just books and stationery, then
Tiki expanded to products such as household appliances, technology electronics,
cosmetics, ... At the same time, building develop programs to protect the interests
of consumers, policies of quick delivery. Tiki has made great strides and rose to the
top of the largest e-commerce platforms in Vietnam. In 2014, Tiki was voted as
"the most popular e-commerce website"
