2 FWA Operation
Operation Overview

The FWA must be calibrated before it is used to calibrate the IOT.

The calibration procedure uses the WR Roll tiles as references. A
number of measurements are made on the different reference strips
and the FWA DC PWB uses these measurements to perform the
calibration. After the FWA is calibrated, it can be used to accurately
measure test patterns created by the IOT.
An FWA calibration occurs at the following times:
• It can be manually invoked through the use of a diagnostic
routine.
• It is invoked automatically during press power on, if it has been
approximately two hours after the last automatic calibration.

For example, when the press is powered up first thing in the

morning, it will be more than two hours since the last
automatic calibration, so the press will perform an automatic
calibration at power on. However, if you power the press off
and on within the next two hours, the auto calibration will not
be performed at power on.

dC970 FWA Setup

dC970 FWA Setup is used to calibrate the FWA. It is performed
during the FWA Kit installation. It ensures that all the FWA
components are working correctly and within specification. If
any FWA component is replaced, then dC970 must be
performed to recalibrate the system.
GP18 FWA Setup provides instructions for when to perform
dC970 and the correct sequence for performing the other
diagnostic routines.
The system regularly performs portions of dC970 to maintain
self-calibration. You should not have to perform dC970 just to
run the other FWA Diagnostic routines.

2 FWA Operation
Diagnostic Routines

dC970 FWA Setup

The first calibration routine is Gain Offset Adjustment.
In this routine, the WR Roll is rotated to the White Reference
Strip. For the Gain measurement, the Lamps are lit and the
system measures the amount of reflectance. As components
age, the amount of reflectance can change. The White
Reference Strip is used as the standard, so if the voltage output
from the CCD array to the FWA DC PWB changes, the FWA DC
PWB compensates to return it to the correct digital value.
For the Offset measurement, the lamps are switched off. This
sets up the input to the FWA DC PWB for black. The Gain and
Offset adjustment sets the FWA to the full range of 0 to 255
when measuring from black to white.

The Shading Profile Update again uses the White Reference
Strip on the WR Roll. The FWA DC PWB monitors the reading
along the entire length of the strip (inboard - outboard). The
system then compensates for any variations in the sensor
reading.

The Position Adjustment uses the Registration Tiles on the WR
Roll. The routine uses three different sets of tiles to ensure
correct focus and registration.
The three routines are:
• Lighting Depth
• Focus
• Read Position

Lighting Depth (or Depth of Field ) uses three sets of three tiles.
The three tiles are staggered so that one is higher, one lower,
and the middle one is flush with the level of the Test Print
Measurement Surface. The lower and upper tiles should
measure the wrong number of pixels because they are too close
or too far away. The middle tile should be the correct depth.

dC970 FWA Setup

The Focus routine measures the gray tiles. These tiles are
actually very fine lines. The FWA measures the number of pixels
for each line and for the white space between the lines. The
FWA DC PWB adjusts its threshold for analog-to-digital
conversion to ensure the correct number of pixels are counted.

The Read Position measures through the Z tiles. The FWA
measures in a line across the Z pattern and determines the
position of the WR Roll by analyzing the relative position where
the sensor crosses the three locations. The location where the
sensor crosses the diagonal line in relation to the sides of the Z
will vary, depending on the position of the WR Roll.

The WR Roll Assembly is adjusted in manufacturing and a

calibration number (used in NVM location 782-822) for the
correct position is located on the side of the WR Roll Assembly.
Only minor changes to this value should be required.

Sensor Color Calibration uses the Color Tiles on the WR Roll.

When the system is installed, Sensor Color Calibration is run and

Set Correction selected. This establishes the T0 (Time Zero)
values for the FWA Lamp Assembly. When Read is selected,
these T0 values are displayed.

When the routine is run again and Start selected, the tiles are
measured, and the T0n (Time Zero Now) values are displayed.
The T0n values are compared against internal specifications to
determine if the reading passes. Do NOT select Set Correction.

When the FWA Lamp Assembly is replaced, perform Sensor

Color Calibration and after the measurements are made, select
Set Correction. The T0n values are saved as new T0 values for
the FWA Lamp Assembly.

dC971 – FWA CTRACS Adjustment

For the FWA CTRACS Adjustment, the press prints test patches
that the FWA reads.

This adjustment is used to adjust the IOT Look-Up Tables (LUT)

so that the printer produces accurate and consistent renditions
of C, M, Y, and K of varying densities and for all used screens.

NOTE: The customer can also perform this routine through a

customer application. The customer application will be described
later in the training.

dC971 – FWA CTRACS Adjustment

Under the Main tab, you can select Simple or High Accuracy
modes. With Simple selected, any of the Screens, including All,
can be selected. One set of five test patterns is printed and
measured.

With High Accuracy selected, under Screen, any of the screens

can be selected, but All is not available. The routine will
continue to print sets, measure patches, apply corrections, and
reprint (up to 20 sets), until the measurement meets an IQ
threshold.

Select the Paper Tray. The paper stock can be 8.5 x 11 in. (A4)

2 FWA Operation
Diagnostic Routines

dC971 – FWA CTRACS Adjustment Target Location Mark

When Auto Tone Correction is selected, the CTRACS routine generates
target prints containing 24 different density levels for each color (CMYK)
for a total of 96 patches. The target prints contain small location marks
on the outside edges of the patches. The target prints are similar to the
ProCon test pattern.

When a test print is measured, the FWA averages the measurement of a

small area of pixels within each patch. This routine ensures that the
patches on the test prints are read correctly. The FWA reads each patch
and compares the value of the measured patch to the expected value.
When Confirm Print is selected, the CTRACS routine applies the calculated
correction and prints the patches. These prints do not have the target
location marks. Compare this print to the target print to verify that the
image quality is improved. If acceptable, select Set Correction.

Selecting Set Correction applies the correction to the LUT in the press so
that the IOT is color calibrated.

NOTE: This does not calibrate the system. IOT calibration must be
performed first before DFE color calibration.

dC972 – FWA Uniformity

When Start Adjustment is selected, the dC972 routine prints
targets consisting of two pages. One page contains RGB test
patches and the second contains CMYK test patches. The
patches are printed in 60% and 20% density. The test patches
correspond to the Color Tiles on the WR Roll. The FWA reads the
patches for any fast scan (IB-OB) variation.

When Confirm Print is selected, the dC972 routine applies the

calculated corrections and reprints the patches. Examine the
Target Print to determine that the density is uniform. If
acceptable, select Set Correction.

The corrections, if applied, are sent to the IOT where they are
used to change the ROS profile.

dC973 – Alignment Setup

dC973 Alignment Setup sends large paper - 11 x 17 in. (A3) or
12 x 18 in. (SRA3) through the paper path. The routine
measures all the edges of the paper to locate the paper in the
paper path. Also, the FWA monitors the Decurler Exit Sensor to
establish the timing from the activation of the sensor to the
arrival at the FWA measurement site.

With Paper Corner Position Correction checked, the routine

measures the position and timing of the paper and saves
corrected position values to NVM to ensure the sensor measures
the correct locations.

With Paper Corner Position Correction unchecked, the routine

measures the position and timing of the paper and compares
these values to the current NVM values. No corrections are
made to the NVM values. It only verifies if the current settings
are acceptable.

dC974 - FWA CTRACS Manual Adjustment and dC975 – FWA

User Target Set
dC974 and dC975 are manual adjustments of the CTRACS
settings. With these routines, each color can be adjusted along
its curve, for the LUT and the Target Set. Serious IQ problems
can be caused if the curves are incorrectly adjusted. These
diagnostic routines should not be used unless directed by

The trained Technical Key Operator (TKO) will now be required

to clean all surfaces of the White Reference Roll, as part of their
on-going maintenance responsibilities. The cleaning procedure
has been added to the Xerographic Trim Procedure in the XPP
Service Manual (Transfer Module Interim Maintenance). The
Xerographic Trim Procedure (REP 9.5) targets the ADC/MOB
Sensor, V-tra 1, 2 and 4 path sensors, and now the FWA White
Reference Roll, which is performed at a specific interval.

DFE Calibration and Profiling

With the FWA option, DFE calibration and profiling can be
performed if the DFE supports the feature.

Without the FWA option, the procedure is to print the test

patterns and then to manually measure the patches with a hand
spectrophotometer.

With the FWA option, the system recognizes that the press has
an FWA and prints a different test pattern that is read by the
FWA. The system reads all the patches after the operator
initiates the routine.

The service engineer is not required to perform DFE calibration

or profiling. If image quality problems require that a DFE
calibration or profile is needed, ask the customer to perform it,
or call in an analyst to assist the customer.
