What is It

All tools and equipment must be properly maintained so that workers

are not endangered. Regulations require inspections of tools, machines and
equipment before use.

Preventive maintenance is the systematic care and protection of tools,

equipment and machines in order to keep them in a safe, usable condition
limit downtime and extend productivity. We must always be aware that
maintenance tasks themselves are potentially hazardous and can result in
injury.

The successful maintenance program:

• well organized andscheduled;
• controlshazards,
• defines operational procedures;and
• trains keypersonnel.

The degree of detail to include regarding

tools and equipment maintenance will depend
on the kinds of tools/equipment used. Some
construction equipment may have very
specific inspection and maintenance
requirements. Electronic equipment may have
different maintenance requirements. Hand
tools may require only basic maintenance.
Power tools should be maintained in
good working order. This may be limited to
ensuring that blades/bits are replaced when
needed and those guards or other safety
devices are operable and any damaged electrical cords/plugs are repaired or
replaced. Damaged or defective equipment/tools should be tagged and
removed from service.
Most manufacturers can provide maintenance schedules for their
equipment. Large companies typically have a comprehensive maintenance
program due to the capital investment and/or leasing agreements. Smaller
companies may lease equipment and maintenance services may be included
in the leasing agreement.

4
General requirements for tools and equipment maintenance include:
• Obtaining a copy of the maintenance schedule recommended by
themanufacturer;
• Ensuring that maintenance is performed asrequired;
• Ensuring that the person(s) performing the
maintenance are competent; (e.g. licensed mechanic)
• Retaining records of maintenance/serviceconducted;
• Specifying who is responsible for overseeing equipment
maintenance and where the records arekept;
• Set up a system for removal and tagging of damaged or
defective tools and equipment.

MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES

1. CLEANING
Cleaning your tools may be the last thing
you want to do after a day of work, but it's
essential for keeping your tools in good shape.
It's well-worth the time spent doing a little
cleaning to save the time spent repairing a tool
(or the money spent replacing it)
later.(www.slideshare.com)

2. LUBRICATING
Lubricants must also be applied after
tightening to reduce the friction. Corrosion and
rust are the primary factors of a tool that needs
lubrication. Depending on the level of corrosion
or rust, the tool may be unsafe to use.
(www.slideshare.com)

3. TIGHTENING
Bolts and nuts of tools are to be checked
regularly to see if it is still intact or are about
to lose.(www.slideshare.com)

5
4. SHARPENING
Pointed or sharp tools should be kept
sharp to perform its function properly and
efficiently. (www.slideshare.com)

Maintenance is the key to a safe and lifelong tool. This activity is

essential not only in hardware tools but even in our personal life. One way to
give our tools a long usable life is through preventive maintenance. This type
of maintenance prevents failures to happen. Therefore, before a tool is used,
it is checked and re-checked to know if the tool is usable and if so, safe to
use. Remember that in maintenance, the concern is not only on the tool but
more on the safety of the user. As mentioned above, a successful
maintenance program encompasses 4 things and one of which is that tools
are well organized and scheduled. All tools are arranged accordingly and the
use of it is scheduled to ensure that a tool is not overused. Remember that
too much is dangerous.
