Introduction and RRL

This document outlines a research study that will examine the relationship between the level of difficulty of transportation, time management skills, and the grade point average (GPA) of senior high school students at the University of Cebu-Banilad campus. The purpose is to determine if transportation difficulties and poor time management negatively impact students' academic performance as measured by their GPA. An informed consent form is provided for participants. The researcher hypothesizes that transportation problems and weak time management skills will correlate with lower GPAs. Previous related studies on time management and academic performance are briefly reviewed to provide context.

Introduction

In the modern world, it is difficult for the students to manage time especially most of
them are experiencing difficulty of transportation. Time management has been defined as
clusters of behavioral skill sets that are important in the organization of study/course load.
Time management skills include activities performed by students such as planning in
advance, prioritizing work, test preparation, and following schedules (Eid, Safan & Diab,
2015). Experiencing this difficulty in managing time would actually affect individual's
academic performance and achievements, that's why it is needed to value on how to
manage time. Time is seen as an indefinite and usable commodity especially in
transportation and at school. In developing countries where students have a lot of issues
during academic journey have a new story for the researcher to dig out much more
interesting results. Time management practices have an impact on the results of students
as empirical studies done by past researchers. All the material and human resources
possessed by organizations can be enhanced in the course of time or be transformed as
time goes on; yet the only asset that cannot be changed or purchased or stored is time itself
(Nasrullah & Khan, 2015). The secret in achieving successive academic performances and
higher grades is effectively managing this resource that everyone possesses equally and
paying sufficient emphasis to planning.

Students who have many academic works, assignments, and practices may have
struggles in managing in time, especially to the ones who live really far from the school.
One of the main factors in this problem is the competitive environment, though it
encourages people from as early as their elementary education to plan and manage time
effectively. One example of the competitive environment is having problems with the
transportation. Transportation plays a big role in the time management of the students.
Transportation difficulties like traffic, accidents and longer commuting can affect the
physical and mental health of the students and would affect their academic performances.
This study will help to analyze the positive or negative impact of time management and
difficulty of transportation on academic performance of students. It will also help to make
some decision about changes we would like to make to use our time more effectively
(Noftle, Robins & Richard, 2017). There is no one right way to manage our time; however;
it is important to get to know our self, so we can make good decisions about how to use our
time.

As mentioned, past researchers have concluded that time management practices

affects the academic performances of students. There is no doubt that the students
nowadays are the future leaders for nation building. However, the journey of transforming
a nation’s dreams into reality is not easy. Students in every discipline in universities should
overcome various obstacles in order to achieve better academic performance measured by
the GPA system. The Grade Point Average (GPA) system, as an indicator of the students’
academic performance, is used in many countries around the world (James & Chilvers,
2001; Svanum & Zody, 2001). Personal obstacles like time managing in transportation are
common factors that could affect their academic performances. Time management, is a
chief issue among university students, affects how they analysis and apply the time
obtainable to them and how they change to their academic responsibilities (Bonhomme,
2007). The purpose of this correlation study is to determine the significant relationship
between the level of difficulty of transportation and time management level and its effects
on the Grade Point Average (GPA) for the first quarter of the first semester of the Senior
High School ABM students of the University of Cebu-Banilad for the academic year 2019-
2020.

In the International Journal in Management and Social Science(year) the researchers

investigated the impact of time management and academic performance; in terms of short
range planning, time attitude, long range planning on academic performance. The study
developed three hypotheses to test the impact of independent variables on dependent
variable; to test the hypothesis the researchers utilized and checked the outliers and co
linearity and no violation were found. The research found that two dimensions of time
management had significant and positive impact on academic performance at higher
education in Mogadishu, Somalia. This study can contribute to assist University students to
use time management to perform academic activities wisely (Dahie, Osman & Mohamed,
2015). Time management plays a vital role in improving student’s academic performance
and achievements (Nasrullah & Khan, 2015). If the student manages the time well and
wisely, it will have good effects on academic performance.

In the Asia Pacific Journal of Maritime Education,(year) the researchers investigated

the problem of the Marine Transportation students in relation to their academic
performance. Results showed that the students have reported moderately serious
problems on studies and self-concerns with the highest means while family, relate to others
and health on the lighter side. Students with higher academic performance are those
students with high possibility of experiencing health problems, on the other hand, they
have also low tendency of experiencing problems on studies and self-concerns. Maritime
students must realize the value of their contribution in achieving the vision and mission of
the University as well as their future professional roles as seafarers to help them develop
positive attitude and behavior towards school activities related to academics (Atienza,
Linatoc, et al., 2017). This shows how the students’ problems affect their managing in time.
Over managing in time of the academic performances would cause health problems due to
the lack of food ingestion, same way as the over managing in time for the family and other
relations would affect academic performance.

The study aimed to determine the effects of romantic relationship to the academic
performance of UP Cebu BS Computer Science 2 students. The study was conducted to
determine whether or not there is a relationship between academic performance and
motivation as well as association with anxiety, time management in studying and time
spent with their partners. It was found out that the time management of the respondents
was imbalanced which entails that they were more focused in their romantic relationship
than in studying (Bernales & Colonia, 2012). This shows that students can hardly handle
the managing of time in romantic relationship and it will greatly affect their academic
performance. It is also shown that there were great factors that would affect the students in
their time management not just the difficulty of transportation.
As mentioned above, factors affecting the time management of students like the
romantic relationships and mismanagement of time that would greatly affect the academic
performance and achievements of the students. There were also significant and positive
effects when the time will be managed well and wisely, but nowadays, it is hard to manage
time especially there were different factors in the competitive environment. In the
competitive environment, transportations would be the main problem for the students
(McNillie, 2015). This study aims to determine the significant relationship between the
difficulty of transportation and time management and how it will affect their academic
performance. This study helps students on how to respond to the problems of
transportation and how they will manage their time when they experienced difficulties of
it.

Review of Related Literature

In the Philippines, difficulty of transportation is the main factor in managing time of

the students. With this, it affects the students’ academic performance. Time management
plays an important role on the life of the students so that they can achieve and maintain
good academic performance and would result to good grades. Time management practices
have been proven to be some of the top indicators toward achieving a high level of
academic success and performance (Fazal, 2012). However, factors like difficulty of
transportation affect these practices. Someone may be able to manage money; someone
may even be able to manage people, but someone won’t get far in life if someone cannot
manage time. Time is a priceless time, all people know that time cannot be changed and
cannot be taken back. Nowadays, all of the people have so much stuff which they have to
do, but also they have so limited time for this entire job. The most effective solution to
overcome complex issues that people have their daily or academic life is time management.
In this connection, the researchers aim to conduct this study to know the relationship of
difficulty of transportation and time management and how it will affect their grades, also,
to help the students know on how they can respond to the different factors that can affect
their time management.
