³NZ Hits 10,000 EVs
YES, we know, this isn’t a hot rod snippet but being
forward-thinking people, we all like to know future trends
and what’s coming just around the corner. Here’s a new
statistic which caught our eye: While domestic growth in
EVs continues to maintain an exponential rate with 10,000
registrations, globally the trend is similar. Worldwide 70%
more EVs were sold in the second quarter of this year than
all of last year. But here’s the thing - the world is coming
around to the idea of EVs, and it’s coming around to them
fast. Global inventories in popular models are getting tight.
Delivery times of six months and more are now common in
Europe, where most cars are built to order. Some Kiwis are
ordering Kona Elite which won’t be here until March/April
2019. There’s little doubt that over the next 12 months it’s
going to become increasingly difficult to secure new EVs
in NZ. Sure we love second-hand cars, but supplies of these
may also tighten as global demand continues to increase.

³LVVTA’s Component Testing

IN response to the ever-increasing number of unsafe
aftermarket components hitting the market, LVVTA’s efforts
to help the hobby has moved to the next level through
the development of a purpose-built cyclic test rig. The
rig was configured to replicate light driving forces on an
aftermarket tilt-adjustable steering column, although this
is just one of many uses LVVTA have in mind for it.
Why cyclic? While some components may easily pass a one-off
load test, most automotive components, throughout the life of
the vehicle they are fitted to, undergo a high number of cyclic
(repeated) loads. The cyclic test rig replicates those loads.
As unproven and poorly constructed products are
becoming increasingly common in the hot rod aftermarket,
the cyclic test rig has been designed so it can be used
for many different components, not limited strictly
to steering products. This will help enable LVVTA to
prove or disprove the quality of components intended
to be fitted to hot rods and low volume vehicles.
The design allows for columns to be tested at a range of angles,
including their maximum tilt setting, a position in which
they’re often driven in hot rods and pick-ups — a situation
which creates the highest loads such a column will receive.
With the rig now operational, LVVTA is fine-tuning the
process to which columns will be tested, using a mix of
data sourced from vehicle manufacturers and reputable
aftermarket column test data. It’s important to note, this test
is for tilt-adjustable columns only, not for straight columns.
For the time being, there are no confirmed changes to existing
steering column requirements. However LVVTA hopes to
develop a clearer picture of the suitability of a wide range
of aftermarket steering columns going forward, which will
then be detailed within the LVV Certification system.
Further information visit lvvta.org.nz.

³A Few Ideas For Your New FED Build
WE still hear about new front engine dragsters being
built or resurrected in New Zealand so here are a
couple of ideas which someone may find useful.
From Bruce Taylor.

It’s not a FED, but white pleated trim along with a white
steering wheel and headers certainly gives a car that ‘60s look.

The hand gripes swivel on this steering wheel which requires a lot
less hand movement to keep it in a straight line. The brake lever
knob is a column shift gear lever knob from a 1946-‘48 Ford V8.

Enclosed cockpits look cool, but I’m told that for ease of
access and exit a padded interior makes it a lot easier. No
doubt the aerofoil up the side of the body serves a purpose.

Words by Robin and photos by Craig Stare

WHEN I was a young lad, in the

early seventies, I would draw
Model A Ford hot rods in my school
books. This was my inspiration
and my dream that I would have
one of these when I got older.
I was lucky enough that my dad
owned a wrecking yard in Geraldine,
which mainly consisted of cars from
the thirties and forties with a sprinkling
from the fifties. We had a lot of fun in
that yard. One car I remember which
got saved and is still a nice rod today
is a 1935 Ford tudor which Colin
Robinson extracted from the yard in
the mid-seventies. As kids, we had a
lot of fun growing up and spending
all our spare time in the yard.
I remember Colin Johnstone bought
a 1930 A roadster from the yard which
had been cut down into a truck. I was
talking to Colin one day in 2005, and
amazingly over twenty years later he
still had the body but had scrapped
the broken and rusted chassis. A deal
was struck, and I had the start of a
new project. I had always had my 1939
Dodge sedan to attend events with, but
this was the start of my long-held dream.
I started by building a replica chassis
out of 3’x2” box section, fitted a
narrowed XJ6 Jaguar independent

front end with Toyota rack and pinion. The Commodore
rear end is narrowed utilising the stock Holden coil-
overs and hand-fabricated top arms. Next mission I
found a 350 Chevrolet engine with turbo 350 trans,
both with a few improvements and then mounted
them into the chassis. The brakes are HQ master
cylinder, twin VH44 power boosters Toyota pedal
assembly. The front rotors are Mitsubishi Evo with
Toyota callipers and rear are Commodore assemblies.
When it came to the body, a good friend of mine Tony
Robinson was invaluable. We started by making a 1” by
2” subframe and started piecing the bits back together
with the aid of new Brookville rear quarter panels,
trunk lid and door skins. Tony bought the rest of the
panels back to life and spent many hours widening
the rear fenders, but I could not get used to the look.
Finally, I was lucky enough to get a good used set from
the L.A. Roadster Show Swap Meet. (sorry Tony). After
many hours on the body, Tony said he would put some
paint on it, but it would only be done in undercoat, so
what is on it now is just a shiny undercoat! A dropped
headlight bar with original Model A lights are used.
The interior is simple but very effective done by local
man, David Brown Upholstery in distressed dark green
leather over a 1936 Dodge bench seat. A Toyota column
was used with an alloy cover spun up in the lathe. The
Model A dash panel runs Pricol gauges, a Moon tacho
and a Lokar shifter. The screen is chopped 40mm
with green tint glass, and the top is a Rod Tops unit.

> 17
Finishing the picture are American racing wheels
15”x7” with 185 65Rr15s on front and 15”x8” with 255
70R15s on the rear. This roadster is living proof that
an affordable, top class car can be built in a home
garage and be put on the road relatively painlessly.
Robin lives in Timaru and is a member of
Waimate’s Classic and Custom club. On the car’s
first outing it won a Top 5 award at Tornado’s
50th and top car at the Waimate poker run
with many “topless” miles to come.

magazines, automotive books,
badges and number plates. For
the home DIY person, there was
an entire oxy-acetylene plant plus
a smattering of early car parts and
even a sculpture for the home.
Next, we headed to the main car
show in the racetrack’s infield
where we found mostly vintage
and classic cars with just a few
hot rods and street machines.
Over in the pit area was a huge
display of vintage midgets, one in
particular powered by a flathead
Willys 4 and with a history dating
back to the 1940s. A great all-
around event for enthusiasts with
an open mind and wide tastes.

that he wrote to NZ Truth and asked
if they could give him a contact
address. (Remember there were no
cell phones, computers or internet in
’62) NZ Truth wrote back with Bert
Cook and the ConRodders’ details.
Al wrote to Bert, and they
exchanged letters, photos and
cards. Al has always treasured
these very early photos, and
looking at them today still brings
back warm memories of times
past. If you can identify any of
these early ConRodders from
almost 60 years ago, please let
us know here at NZHR mag.

Dear Al
I have been around the boys
collecting the negatives of the

on Wednesday, so I will send them
up during the week. Our Club has
fallen through in a fashion; there
are only six members left out of

I send the photos, I will number

travel from Wellington to visit Duane’s
workshop in Bakersfield, California
and he has done on many occasions.
It was there he decided it’d be cool to
have his own hot rod and perhaps a
’33 Ford coupe would appeal. Duane
had all the parts and resources and
shipped a rolling chassis stretched

components to build the car back to

Auto Restorations played a big part
in the paint and final assembly while
progress and technical certification
were handled by Danny McKenna. The
car hit the road in 2016 and Wayne
is delighted with the entire package.
The rake, stance and colour have

make it a pleasure to drive. It’s no
wonder then that he’s already cruising
our country roads racking up miles
of smiles and sweet memories too!

LATE winter saw the annual Waiuku car show back with a
good selection of hot rods, street machines and Army Jeeps on
display plus country charm mini-events like wood chopping and
motorcycle stunt riding to please the large crowds. Highlights
were Craig Brown’s Top Doorslammer and the Jet dragster which
both did fire-ups, much to the pleasure of show patrons. With
the main street closed to through-traffic, the pubs and cafes
did a roaring trade, and it was a great way to spend the day.

Technology Marches Forward…
One of the big advances was the
reliability of electric (and electronic)
tachometers. Instead of being sort of
accurate, modern electronics made tachs
into precise and reliable instruments
(provided, of course, you’re not all
thumbs and wire them backwards).
Now, there are likely dozens of different
electric (or electronic) tachometers
available today. Some have more features A “shift light” is common on many of today’s

Location Is Everything…
First things first: Location of the tach
is everything. The old “on the column”
arrangement might be bad news to
some, but with a tach such as this with It’s a good idea to try the tach in various mounting locations in the car. Here, we’ve tried the tach
