Module No. 1
What is Social Studies?
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the discussion the students should be able to:
Analyze the importance of social studies,
Distinguish the features of the social studies, and
Determine the goals of teaching social studies.
Social studies
- a discipline that includes humanities such as geography, history, and political
science.
- can also be referred to as social sciences. It’s a field which deals with human
behavior, relationships, resources, and institutions.
Specific topics within social studies that are studied in school coursework
include geography, anthropology, economics, history, sociology, political science,
and civics.
TEN THEMES
1. Anthropology 4. History
2. Economics 5. Political Science/Civics
3. Geography 6. Sociology
Anthropology is the field of study concerned with the discovery of what people
were like from the earliest existence. Basically, the how, what, and why people
change over the years.
Physical Anthropology is the study of the physical aspects of human
kind. Human habitations such as ancient dwellings, monuments, objects of
art, tools weapons, etc.
Cultural anthropology is concerned with the different types of
human behavior, past, and present, found throughout the world.
History is the study of how people lived in the past. This may include how people
lived in local communities, or the world.
Geography is the study of the earth, including its features and the distribution of
its human inhabitants and other life. Students need to become familiar with the five
geography themes:
Location – describes where specific places or points are on a map or
the earth’s surface.
Place – Describes the unique or distinct characteristics of a location.
Relationships within places – describes how people react to their
environment and the changes they make.
Movement – characterizes how people travel from place to place, how
they communicate with each other, and how they depend on products and
information from other areas.
Regions – categorizing an area according to its features (climate,
landform, land use, natural vegetation, culture and etc.)
Political Science – also referred to as civics, is the study of how people govern
themselves.
Sociology is the study of humans and their interactions in groups. Groups may be
small as a nuclear family or as large as a union. Sociologists look for common
values and beliefs.
Sociologist tend to conduct case studies of either individuals or a group
over a period of time. As case study usually consists of information pertaining to
the daily routine of the individuals or the group.
The main goal of teaching social studies is to teach students to become good
citizens. We are living in a diverse society which requires knowledge of social
studies to succeed. With a social studies background, children become adults that
can participate civilly in our democratic society.1
3. Cultural Understanding
Students should be exposed to cultures far beyond what they experience
personally every day. Not every student has the opportunity to interact with other
cultures on a daily basis. We need students to learn about, understand, and
appreciate cultural differences if we expect them to have meaningful interactions
with people of all backgrounds in the future.
4. Economic Education
Economics is a crucial part of social studies, whether studied on its own, or
as a part of history, anthropology, or political science. By learning economics,
young people understand how their financial decisions have an impact on their
future, as well as the future of society.
5. Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is a part of social studies — students are taught to evaluate
others’ decisions and make connections between influences and circumstances.
Young people get the opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes through social
sciences.
6. Real-World Understanding
Studying social sciences gives students an understanding of the real world
around them. Students learn about places, cultures, and events around the world,
what conspired to make them the way they are, and can make inferences about
how the rest of the world works.
7. Political Skills
From social studies classes, students learn about government, political ideas,
country economy and resources, and more. Students gain political skills by
analyzing and evaluating existing systems and imaging the future of the place in
which they live.
8. Respect History
History is what made the world the way it is, and it is essential that people
study it in order to have an appreciation for and understanding of the way the world
works. Learning about history is what makes it possible to learn from the past and
plan for the future.
