TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES

Social Studies is more than a collection of facts for children to memorize; it is
an understanding of how people, places, and events came about and how people
can relate and respond to each other’s needs and desires. Social Studies is also how
we develop respect for different viewpoints and cultural beliefs.
Social Studies is the study of cultural, economic, geographic, and political
aspects of past, current, and future societies.
In 1994, the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) developed new
standards for teaching the social studies. Through ten themes, social studies are
taught in an integrated approach. To integrate the social sciences fully, it is
important that the teacher understand each of the six social sciences.3

TEN THEMES

1. Culture 6. Power, Authority, and

2. Time, Continuity, and Change Governance
3. People, Places, and 7. Production, Distribution, and
Environment Consumption
4. Individual Development and 8. Science, Technology, and
Identity Society
5. Individuals, Groups, and 9. Global Connection
Institutions 10. Civic Ideals and Practices

SIX Social Sciences

1. Anthropology 4. History
2. Economics 5. Political Science/Civics
3. Geography 6. Sociology

Anthropology is the field of study concerned with the discovery of what people
were like from the earliest existence. Basically, the how, what, and why people
change over the years.
Physical Anthropology is the study of the physical aspects of human
kind. Human habitations such as ancient dwellings, monuments, objects of
art, tools weapons, etc.
Cultural anthropology is concerned with the different types of
human behavior, past, and present, found throughout the world.

Economics is the field of study concerned with the production, distribution,

exchange, and consumption of products.

Production – The making of goods and products. The study compares

the goods and services provided by businesses in their community.
Distribution – To dispense goods and services. The study shows how
goods and services are made available to consumers through advertising,
selling, and shipping. Exchange involves taking one thing for another in
trade; may be goods or services for money or other goods or services.
Consumption is determined by the needs and wants of the buyer.

History is the study of how people lived in the past. This may include how people
lived in local communities, or the world.

Geography is the study of the earth, including its features and the distribution of
its human inhabitants and other life. Students need to become familiar with the five
geography themes:
Location – describes where specific places or points are on a map or
the earth’s surface.
Place – Describes the unique or distinct characteristics of a location.
Relationships within places – describes how people react to their
environment and the changes they make.
Movement – characterizes how people travel from place to place, how
they communicate with each other, and how they depend on products and
information from other areas.
Regions – categorizing an area according to its features (climate,
landform, land use, natural vegetation, culture and etc.)

Political Science – also referred to as civics, is the study of how people govern
themselves.

Sociology is the study of humans and their interactions in groups. Groups may be
small as a nuclear family or as large as a union. Sociologists look for common
values and beliefs.
Sociologist tend to conduct case studies of either individuals or a group
over a period of time. As case study usually consists of information pertaining to
the daily routine of the individuals or the group.

Importance of Teaching and Studying Social studies

The main goal of teaching social studies is to teach students to become good
citizens. We are living in a diverse society which requires knowledge of social
studies to succeed. With a social studies background, children become adults that
can participate civilly in our democratic society.1

The Importance of Social Studies in The School Curriculum

All children who go through the school curriculum become something when
they graduate and no matter what that something is, they will need to interact with
others from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students must study
how society works, and how people work in a society in order for it all to work once
they enter society after graduation.
Students learn skills through social studies that help them succeed in further
education as well as life. Here are all the amazing 8 reasons in learning social
studies that benefits kids and society together:

1. Better Reading and Learning

Social studies is one area in education where content integration is key.
Students are given reading material that corresponds with the current learning
topics. Giving reading materials in context helps students become better readers.
They also become better learners because they are asked to use analysis, critical
thinking, and writing to show understanding.

2. Citizen Responsibilities and Values

How can we expect young people to contribute positively to society, engage
in discourse, and thrive in a democratic society if they are not exposed to the topics
and aspects of history and life that made society the way it is? Students need an
understanding of history, political science, culture, and all humanities to be able to
understand why it is important to be a good citizen.

3. Cultural Understanding
Students should be exposed to cultures far beyond what they experience
personally every day. Not every student has the opportunity to interact with other
cultures on a daily basis. We need students to learn about, understand, and
appreciate cultural differences if we expect them to have meaningful interactions
with people of all backgrounds in the future.

4. Economic Education
Economics is a crucial part of social studies, whether studied on its own, or
as a part of history, anthropology, or political science. By learning economics,
young people understand how their financial decisions have an impact on their
future, as well as the future of society.

5. Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is a part of social studies — students are taught to evaluate
others’ decisions and make connections between influences and circumstances.
Young people get the opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes through social
sciences.

6. Real-World Understanding
Studying social sciences gives students an understanding of the real world
around them. Students learn about places, cultures, and events around the world,
what conspired to make them the way they are, and can make inferences about
how the rest of the world works.

7. Political Skills
From social studies classes, students learn about government, political ideas,
country economy and resources, and more. Students gain political skills by
analyzing and evaluating existing systems and imaging the future of the place in
which they live.

8. Respect History
History is what made the world the way it is, and it is essential that people
study it in order to have an appreciation for and understanding of the way the world
works. Learning about history is what makes it possible to learn from the past and
plan for the future.

Goals and Emphasis of Teaching Social studies

Modern educational standards demand students gain a deeper perspective on

citizenship, the world, and history than simple memorization of dates, events, and
facts allows.
To help students realize the importance of historical events, geography,
cultural differences, and political ideologies, social studies teachers explore these
subjects with their students in-depth, providing memorable lessons and in-class
discussions that connect the past with the present.
Social studies teachers help students explore how the main themes of our history
play a part in their everyday lives. Learning historical accounts of how race, class,
gender, language, and nationality affected people in the past allows students to
identify with the material in a more personal way that transcends simple date
memorization.

Why teach social studies?

Social studies imparts essential knowledge for students hoping to make
informed decisions in the future. Some important benefits of a quality social studies
education include:

1. Students become better judges of world affairs

By exploring world governments, conflicts, alliances, and political
affiliations, students gain a holistic view of how nations interact with each
other. Students will determine the causes of war, economic concerns of
individual counties, and how the world functions as the result of
communications between multiple nations.

2. Students understand change and how the world and nations

developed
Studies study the history of world civilizations, how they rose, how
they fell, and where current nations stand in history. Students learn why
nations are located in certain areas, from geographic reasons like resources
and landmass, to reasons such as war or technological advancement.

3. Students learn skills essential for citizenship

Social studies informs students about the ways our democracy
functions, such as how citizens are represented by elected officials and how
the voting process works. Students explore world’s founding documents and
civic institutions to understand how they, as future citizens, will fit into the
democratic process. These courses also require students to participate in
community events and service-learning projects to understand how citizens
work together to create a functioning society.

4. Students develop critical thinking skills by analyzing decisions made

by famous leaders in history
Everyone learns from their mistakes. Students have the benefit of
learning from other peoples’ mistakes as they explore successful and
unsuccessful decisions made throughout history by world leaders. Students
participate in history simulations and role-playing exercises to see first-hand
how different decisions might have affected the world today.
