4. Describe and explain how Jose Rizal helped the Calamba folks with regard to their problems in
the hacienda which the Dominican order owned.
The tenants have been suffering for many years as a result of the unreasonable taxes they
had to pay. Even if there was an economic downturn or a poor crop, rents and taxes
increased. The tenants were mistreated by the friars. The government was perplexed as to
why the Dominican Order's earnings had stayed steady despite the growing area of
cultivated fields. The government has requested the Calamba town council to investigate
if the Dominican estate's goods and size have increased over the last three years. The friars
wished to keep the tenants from speaking the truth. The Rizal family, as well as the other
tenants of Calamba, desired to reveal the truth. Rizal was persuaded by the tenants to write
a report for the town council.
The original hacienda owned by the Jesuits consisted of only a small part of land and
included only a part of the town, but the Dominicans claimed a much larger area, no less
than the entire town and its surrounding fields, and the Dominicans were only paying the
government the income tax. In January 1988, Rizal typed down his findings, which the
tenants signed, and he submitted the report to the government. Rizal encouraged his family
not to pay the rent any longer. The remainder of the Calamba tenants followed suit,
petitioning the government to intervene by authorizing and monitoring the drafting of a
new contract between the inhabitants of Calamba and Dominican landowners, with Rizal's
assistance.
5. Among the characters of Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere who among them would you like to be in
relation to you as a student? Why?
The character that struck me the most is Crisostomo Ibarra. As a student, I see myself in
him because of his willingness to fight for what is right. Also, he is an idealistic and
outspoken man. Being idealistic should be present to all students because you should have
a creative mind, to answer all questions.
