ESSAY.
1. Describe and explain how Jose Rizal, gained friendship of the passengers of the steamer
Djemnah even if he was only the Filipino on board.
The Djemnah Steamer was a French steamer, and the majority of the passengers spoke
French. Rizal attempted to converse with the others despite his language challenges caused
by his incorrect French Language Book. To get around the language barrier, Rizal
improvised by conversing in Spanish-Latin with other travelers and using his
sketches. Rizal's conversational style and everyday conversations with fellow passengers
enabled him to establish new acquaintances and enhance his French language skills.
2. Given the chance to be like Rizal who had written his great novel “Noli Me Tangere” that
created so much trouble, what would you do as a student?
Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere was all about the description of the Spanish colonization
here in the Philippines and how the Spanish treated Filipinos badly. This novel has a lot of
symbolism and real-life events that opened the eyes of the Filipino people during the
Spanish colonization to start the revolution and overthrow the Spanish colonizers. As a
student, this novel tells us that we should reflect on our actions and beliefs for our country.
The theme of the novel is to promote nationalism and to accept change in ourselves is still
applies to us today. We must patronize our country by respecting the law, promoting
Philippine culture, and realizing the true goal of the country by helping each other towards
the improvement of the country. Additionally, this novel taught us in our school does not
repeat the history itself by learning how to love our country and to empower the youth as
the catalyst of change for our country.
3. Compare and contrast the duties and authority of the guardia civil during rizal’s time and the
law enforcers of the present time.
COMPARISON
The Guardia Civil has been through significant changes since its foundation, allowing it to adapt
to new situations while putting forth tireless attempts to modernize. This, combined with its
proximity to the people, has resulted in it becoming one of the most respected institutions in
Spanish society today. additionally, Guardia Civil is now a military-style armed institution that is
part of the National Law Enforcement Agencies. As a result, the 1978 Spanish Constitution
specifies as its primary objective the protection of Spaniards' rights and liberties, as well as public
security, both of which are always within the power of the Spanish government.
Furthermore, Noli Me Tángere and El filibusterismo, two fictional novels by José Rizal, feature
the Guardia Civil's work. In el felibusterismo when a coachman is held up, hit, and brought to
prison by an officer of the Guardia Civil for failing to show his cédula a which is also used for the
community tax certificate up to now.
CONTRAST
Law enforcement is the activity of some members of the government who work together to enforce
the law by recognizing, prohibiting, rehabilitating, or punishing those who disobey society's
guidelines and norms. Spain's Guardia Civil was the country's first national law enforcement body.
It was created in 1844, early in Queen Isabel II of Spain's reign, and with the cooperation of several
political forces. The Civil Guard, also known as the Spanish Guardia Civil, is a national police
organization in Spain organized along military lines and is mainly responsible for preserving order
in rural regions and patrolling borders and highways. However, the present-day Philippine
National Police owes its historical existence to a combination of Spanish and American colonial
influences. The United States colonized the Philippines in 1898 as a result of the American victory
over Spain in the Spanish‐American War. This colonizing effort brought resistance from Filipino
patriotic elements, who had only recently concluded a revolution against Spain and felt that the
Philippines should be independent from all colonizing powers. The resulting conflict with the
United States ended in defeat for the field army of the Philippine resistance, but remnants of that
army continued to fight all throughout the countryside, mostly as guerrillas.

4. Describe and explain how Jose Rizal helped the Calamba folks with regard to their problems in
the hacienda which the Dominican order owned.
The tenants have been suffering for many years as a result of the unreasonable taxes they
had to pay. Even if there was an economic downturn or a poor crop, rents and taxes
increased. The tenants were mistreated by the friars. The government was perplexed as to
why the Dominican Order's earnings had stayed steady despite the growing area of
cultivated fields. The government has requested the Calamba town council to investigate
if the Dominican estate's goods and size have increased over the last three years. The friars
wished to keep the tenants from speaking the truth. The Rizal family, as well as the other
tenants of Calamba, desired to reveal the truth. Rizal was persuaded by the tenants to write
a report for the town council.
The original hacienda owned by the Jesuits consisted of only a small part of land and
included only a part of the town, but the Dominicans claimed a much larger area, no less
than the entire town and its surrounding fields, and the Dominicans were only paying the
government the income tax. In January 1988, Rizal typed down his findings, which the
tenants signed, and he submitted the report to the government. Rizal encouraged his family
not to pay the rent any longer. The remainder of the Calamba tenants followed suit,
petitioning the government to intervene by authorizing and monitoring the drafting of a
new contract between the inhabitants of Calamba and Dominican landowners, with Rizal's
assistance.
5. Among the characters of Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere who among them would you like to be in
relation to you as a student? Why?
The character that struck me the most is Crisostomo Ibarra. As a student, I see myself in
him because of his willingness to fight for what is right. Also, he is an idealistic and
outspoken man. Being idealistic should be present to all students because you should have
a creative mind, to answer all questions.
