Cultural Competence in Nursing

Article 1

Nelson, K., (2017). Addressing diversity in everyday life nursing. Nursing Praxis in New

Zealand,33(1), 5-6. https://www.nursingpraxis.org/user/file/755/33.1%20a.pdf

Nelson's (2017) article begins by explaining the need for people to embrace cultural

diversity. According to Nelson, nurses and the nursing sector in Aotearoa and many other

countries need to act and embrace cultural diversity. They should take a leading position

in acknowledging cultural diversity while providing acceptable, accessible, and equitable

care to all patients by carefully having cultural awareness of their beliefs, language, and

race. As an important article explaining cultural competence, Nelson puts forth the

premise that a nurse should have the cultural knowledge to provide better care to the

patient. There are changing ways in which health care services are offered, such as

through short appointments and electronic communication and home-based care.

According to Nelson (2017), nurses and other health officials should use their voices to

challenge existing policies and service arrangements and make reforms on how to

communicate with other people. This article is crucial as it explains how nurses should

address diversity to provide better and acceptable care for all.

Article 2

Rahimaghaee, F., & Mosdbar, R. (2017). Cultural Intelligence and it’s relation with professional

competency in nurses. Nursing Practices Today, 4 (3), 115-124.

and-its-relation-with-professional-competency-in-nurses.pdf

Rahimaghaee & Mosdbar's (2017) article explains how cultural competency relates to

professional competency. In their argument, the authors hold that cultural intelligence can

be a crucial aspect that can help nurses handle patients of different cultures since they

have cultural knowledge. Cultural intelligence involves the ability to comprehend other

people's language, beliefs, religion, and race. According to Rahimaghaee (2017),

hospitals are among institutions where cultural diversity is evident due to the interactions

between different patients and health professionals; therefore, nurses should have cultural

awareness to provide better healthcare. This article also asserts that improving a nurse's

professional competency can be crucial in improving their cultural intelligence.

According to the authors of this article, there is a positive correlation between cultural

intelligence and professional competence; therefore, nurses who have higher cultural

intelligence are able to provide better health care to patients since they have adequate

knowledge of the beliefs, languages, and race of the different patients they are handling.

Their cultural intelligence reflects their professional competence. This article is helpful in

understanding cultural competence as it brings out important information about how

cultural intelligence among nurses can help them improve their patient relations while

reflecting their professional competence.
