Section 2
Overview

The C6U is a downstream communications link used in analog and digital CATV headends. To
convert IF signals into cable frequency, or RF, output signals, the C6U consists oftwo
converters, referred to as converter A and converter B. Each converter has separate IF inputs
and frequency agile RF outputs with a tuning range from 50 MHz to 1 GHz. Because of its
expanded bandwidth capability, the C6U can address system upconversion needs in any
headend system application with television IF signals including:

Satellite-received analog and digital multiplex video broadcast

Locally originated and received signal services
Analog addressable channels
Digital signal (i.e., 64 QAM)
Video dialtone signal applications

The flexibility designed into the C6U enables the delivery of analog and digital video, audio,
and data for a multitude of service applications.
In an analog system, the C6U supports addressable channels. An encoded analog composite IF
signal is received from the encoder and upconverted for transmission on the transport network.
A modulating video processor, such as the General Instrument MVP II, is used to scramble
video, audio, and data information on an addressable channel in a CATV system.
In a digital system, the C6U accepts a 64 QAM modulated digital signal from General
Instrument Integrated Receiver Transcoder, Model IRT 1000. The IRT processes received
input signals, producing an IF signal appropriate fClr transmission in a 6 MHz cable television
picture.

Functional Overview
The main components of the C6U are two independent IF -to-RF upconverters. Both channel A
and B incorporate three separate, switchable IF inputs with an associated RF output: Primary
IF (IF IN), Auxiliary IF (AUX IN), and Program IF (PRGM IN). A functional block diagram of the
C6U, shown in Figure 2-1, illustrates the independent operation of the two upconverters.

Inputs
To ensure signal consistency, each of the three IF input sources includes a detector that is
monitored by the microprocessor unit (MPU). If the IF input drops below +25 dBmV, a
warning message appears on the front panel display.
To provide a fail safe alternative if your selected IF source is lost, the C6U allows you to:

Automatically activate an alternative input

Manually switch inputs using the menu

• Hard wire a selection on the rear panel terminal strip

C6U Installation Manual

Overview 2-3

Gain Control
Because switching between IF signal sources can result in unequal input, each converter is
equipped with an independent automatic gain control (AGC) circuit. These circuits guarantee
a constant input to the upconverter, a sample ofthe IF signal after the AGC processing and
before the frequency upconversion is available at the front panel 0 dBmV IF test connector.
AGC, however, should be disabled if the IF input is a sync-suppressed video or a digitally
modulated carrier. To disable AGC, select digital mode (MOD DIG) or scrambled mode (MOD
scm using the front panel keypad or the remote control.

CAUTION! AGC should be disabled if the IF input is a sync-suppressed video or a

digitally modulated carrier. To disable AGC, select digit mode (MOD DIG) or
scrambled mode (MODE SCR) using the front panel keypad or the remote control.

Upconversion
The C6U uses two mixers to upconvert the IF signal. The first upconverts the signal to a fixed
high frequency that ensures that any resulting spurious carriers are above the upper frequency
range ofthe C6U. This high frequency IF is amplified, filtered, and applied to the second
mixer that converts the high frequency IF carrier to the final output frequency between 50 and
1000 MHz. The second mixer frequency is controlled by the MPU to match the selected
frequency or channel setting. Ifthe MPU fails or the C6U loses phase lock, the RF output is
turned off automatically and a warning message is displayed on the front panel.
The RF output ofthe second mixer is applied to a variable loss PIN attenuator and controlled
by adjusting the RF output level via the main menu. This allows you to fine tune the C6U
output to match the headend output levels delivered to the system.
The RF signal is then applied to the output bandpass filter bank. The appropriate filter is
selected based on the C6U output channel or frequency. This filter system minimizes
broadband output noise and allows unlimited broadband combining without external bandpass
filters.
Finally, the filtered signal is fed to a wideband, low distortion amplifier capable of delivering an
operational RF output level of 60 dBmV or higher. The RF output of each converter is
monitored and a warning message is displayed when the signal falls below a predetermined
level or is lost completely. If the C6U is configured in the backup mode, the backup converter
is automatically activated and replaces the primary converter. A sample of the outputs of the
active converter is available at the -20 dB RF reference point on the front panel.

C6U Installation Manual

2-4 Overview

Programmable Configurations
The C6U can be used in the following configurations for both digital and analog signals.

Dual Independent Mode Because of their separate IF input and RF circuitry, converter A and
converter B operate independently. Each can be programmed for a
different frequency or channel, and each RF output can be independently
adjusted.
Backup Mode Only one converter is active at anyone time; the other, which is parallel
processing the signal, serves as a backup in case the first fails. If the MPU,
which controls both converters, detects the loss of RF output signal or
phase lock on the primary converter, it deactivates the primary converter
and activates the backup converter which has exactly the same
configuration. To utilize backup mode, configure the primary converter to
your headend requirements and select the backup mode for the other
converter. This mode requires that you split the IF inputs and combine both
RF outputs as shown in Figure 16 in Section 3, Installation.
Idle Mode One converter is active and the other is placed in "hot standby" status, i.e.,
the converter is energized, but the RF output is turned off. Also, all warning
messages are suppressed except when the idle converter loses phase lock
or a valid IF is applied to the input (then IDLE A or IDLE B is displayed).

Options
The options available with the C6U are:

Remote Control Option Board, Model C6-RC-II Kit

DC Power Option Board, Model C6-DC
External phase lock ( only available as factory installed)

C6-RC-1I Kit
The C6-RC-II accessory module allows you to remotely control the upconverter via a personal
computer. All front panel controls, operating parameters, and adjustments can be
accomplished from a remote location. The remote control communications board with an
RS-485 type interface and RJ-12 connectors, as well as the appropriate software package is
included in this kit. The C6U must have a firmware revision of 2.0 or higher. The firmware
revision can be found using the Option menu. If the revision is not 2.0 or higher, please
contact the General Instrument Technical Response Center for assistance.

C6-DC
The dc power input option accepts dc power in the range of -20 to -60 Vdc. This option, which
includes a dc-to-dc converter and a rear panel terminal strip, replaces the standard ac power
input. This option is only available from the factory.

main IF is lost.

Automatic PROGRAM IF
Automatic switching ofthe IF input to the PRGM IN input can be turned on by choosing PGMA
ON from the Option menu. The unit will switch to PRGM IN only if main IF is lost and AUXA is
not active.

IF Automatic Gain Control (AGC)

IF AGC (lAGC) is provided so that IF switching can be used without critically balancing the
levels of the IF signal sources. This AGC is a video-sync, tip-referenced, peak detector type.
Ifthe sync information is modified by IF sync suppression scrambling, or if a digitally
modulated signal is used, a constant peak reference will no longer be available for AGC
operation, and variation in carrier level with picture content will result. Therefore, IF AGC
operation must be turned off when sync suppression scrambling is present.
To turn off the IF AGC, go to the Option menu and choose the IF AGC menu item. Change
from IAGC ON to IAGC OFF. As soon as the change is made, manual gain control becomes
available.
Note: When MOD DIG (modulation, digital) or MOD SCR (modulation, scrambled) is chosen
from the Option menu, the IF AGC is automatically turned off The manual gain
control menu ([MGC) is then automatically displayed and made available.

Installation 3-5

Selecting the RF Channel Frequency Plan

The C6U meets the FCC Part 76 Frequency Rules. It operates in STD, IRC, HRC, FRQ, or EIA
modes. The difference between IRC and Standard frequency plans is the following:

• For the HRC Phase Lock Mode, channels 54, 55, and 56 are used in the low band in place of
channels 5 and 6.
For the Standard Mode, channels 5 and 6 are located at the standard frequency
assignments. Channels 54, 55, and 56 are at the IRC frequencies. Channels 42, 60, and 61
have the +25 kHz FCC frequency offsets built in.

To select a mode, go to the Option menu and choose Tuning mode. Select MODE IRC, MODE
HRC, MODE STD, MODE FRQ, or MODE EIA.
Appendix B, Frequency Plan shows the relationship between channel and frequency for the
modes.

the gain ofthe C6U prior to setting up the 1M 1000. Follow this procedure:

1 If the spectrum analyzer is a 50-ohm unit and the CW generator is a 75-ohm unit, insert a
75 to 50-ohm transformer between the CW generator and the analyzer.
2 Verify that the output ofthe CW signal generator is 30 ±0.25 dBmV at 43.75 MHz using the
spectrum analyzer.
3 Activate converter A ofthe C6U and place converter B in idle mode.
4 Connect the CW signal generator to the IF input ofthe active converter.
5 Choose modulation type MODU ANA (analog modulation) from the Option menu of the
C6U.
6 Verify that IF AGC is ON for the active converter using the Option menu.
7 Tune to the desired test channel using the Main menu ofthe C6D.
8 Connect a spectrum analyzer to the RF OUT of the active converter.
9 Measure the RF output. Set the output level to 60 ±0.25 dBmV by adjusting the RF output
level control on the Main menu of the C6D.
10 Choose modulation type MODU DIG (digital modulation) from the Option menu to prepare
for manual gain adjustment.
