Alabado, Julien - Sequence

This document contains worksheets and exercises on arithmetic sequences. It defines an arithmetic sequence as a sequence of numbers where each term after the first is obtained by adding a fixed number to the preceding term. The document provides examples of finding the common difference, writing out the first few terms, and determining the nth term of arithmetic sequences. It also contains word problems involving identifying terms of arithmetic sequences and determining whether a given number is a term. The goal is to help students learn about and practice working with arithmetic sequences.

COMMUNICATING
Define arithmetic sequence in your own words.
In my own words, an arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers with a definite pattern. It is
very helpful to us especially in mathematics because we can use this to observe daily
life situation including geometric. Also, learning an arithmetic sequence can start at any
number, but the difference between consecutive terms must always be the same. I’ve
learned that there is a rule to write the formula for any arithmetic sequence and this is:
an = a1 + d (n - 1).
PERFORMANCE TASKS
1. Give examples of two different arithmetic sequences whose third term, a3, is 12.
EXAMPLE 1:
a1 = 4
a1 + 2d = 12
4 + 2d = 12
2d = 8
d=4
Arithmetic Sequence
4, 8, 12, 16,…
EXAMPLE 2:
a1 = 12
a1 + 2d = 12
2 + 2d = 12
2d = 10
d=5

Arithmetic Sequence
2, 7, 12,17,….
2. Verify if 79 is a member of the arithmetic sequence -1, 3, 7, 11, …
Yes
an = 4n – 5
4n – 5 = 79
4n/4 = (79+5)/4 = 21
n = 21
3. In the sequence 2, 6, 10, 14, …, what term is 38?
an = 4n – 2
4n – 2 = 38
4n/4 = (38+2)/4
n = 10
4. In the sequence 1, -2, -5, …, what term is -26?
-26 is not a part of the sequence…
an = -3n + 4
-3n + 4 = -26
-3n/-3 = (-26+4)/3
n = -7.333
5. Find x so that x+2, 4x and 6x+1 are terms of an arithmetic sequence. Write out the terms.
a2 – a1 = a3 – a2
4x – (x + 2) = (6x + 1) - 4x
3x + 2 = 2x + 1
x=3

(3) + 2 = 5
4(3) = 12
6(3) + 1 = 19
