The Past Simple Tense expresses an incident that had occurred in the past or that had
occurred in the past regularly for a defined period of time. It strictly relates to the sporadic or
regular incidents of past only. An incident that had been occurring in the past and is presently
happening does not get any place in Past simple Tense; it is rather covered under Present Simple
Continuous Tenses as we have already studied in the previous exercises.
Simple Past Tense sentences can also be classified under positive sentence, negative sentence
and interrogative sentence category as in the Present Tense sentences. Below given sentences
will be helpful in understanding the concept of Past Simple Tense and its three forms. Please go
through the sentences carefully-
I ate a pie.
Incident that had occurred in the past for a certain period of time-
The above five sentences are in ‘Simple Past Tense’ and determine the incidents that have
occurred in the past. We will also just briefly go through some examples of negative and
interrogative sentences and further cover them in details with structural formula, examples and
exercises.
In the above examples you must have noted that in the ‘Positive Simple Past Tense’ sentences,
second form or past form of the verb is used while in the negative and interrogative sentences –
first or original form of verb is used. Below we will go through all the three forms of ‘Simple Past
Tense’ sentences and will understand their structure and concept with the help of suitable
examples and exercises.
