CHAPTER 1

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY


English is an international language,which grows rapidly nowadays because of
the globalization effect on the information era.English is most widely used language by
people in the world in both oral and written communication.The people decide to study
English in order to face the world’s progress.After having the ability in English,the
people can understand and speak in English,so that it can make the people be able to
communicate with others,to get new ideas and to share some sources of
knowledge.Moreover,to get a job in a company,generally more opportunities are given to
the employers who can speak English well.It happens because many companies in
Indonesia have cooporation with foreign companies.
Because of the importance of English as described above,many universities in
Indonesia have put English as main curriculum.Especially for English Education
Program students,they should master four English language skills,namely
listening,speaking,reading,and writing. Among the four skills,speaking is the most
important for students to master.
Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that concerns
producing, receiving,and processing information.When someone speaks,he or she interact
and uses the language to express his or her ideas,feeling and thought.It is the means
through which learnes can communicate with others toachieve certain goals or to express
their opinion,intentions,hopes and view points.As English Education Departement
mastering speaking is the crucial thing due to communicate effectively.In order to do
so,learners should know the components of speaking therefore they can speak correctly
and fluently.Those components are vocabulary, pronounciation,grammar,and fluency.
In addition,most students have difficulties in using grammar.They do not
understand how to use grammar properly.Consequently,they can’t speak correctly,and
effectively.Meanwhile grammar and speaking are two significant poles in foreign
language acquisition.Without a good knowledge of grammar,learners language
development will severaly constrained.
In conclusion,speaking without mastering grammar,learners will never be certain
of what to speak and how to speak which in the end it will result in a very halting speech
because grammatical structures not only have form,they are also used to express meaning
in context – appropriate use.With this statement,the researcher is interested to find out
whether there is a correlation between students’ grammar ability and students’ speaking
ability.
B. RESEARCH QUESTION
1. What is the correlation between grammar ability and speaking ability ?
2. How grammar can give effect to speaking ability ?
C. LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This research is discus about correlation between grammar ability and speaking
ability of students.Also how grammar can give effect to speaking ability.
D. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To describe the students’ grammar ability.
2. To describe the students’ speaking ability
3. To find the correlation between students’ grammar ability and students’ speaking
ability
E. SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
1. To Students
After have a result of this research,hopefully the students will improve their grammar
ability in order to master their speaking ability.
2. To teacher
The result of this research,can give suggestion to the teacher to know what is the
correlation between grammar ability and speaking ability.And help the teacher to
improve lesson during class.
3. To reader
This research helps the reader in understanding the correlation between grammar
ability and speaking ability.
