Review Related Literature (RRL)

The document discusses a vapor compression refrigeration trainer used by students at a university. It operates using R12, an ozone depleting refrigerant that is being phased out. A research project evaluated alternative eco-friendly refrigerants to find a suitable replacement for R12. Refrigeration plays an important role worldwide but conventional systems use ozone depleting refrigerants. As production and use of refrigerators increases, it is important to develop non-CFC refrigeration systems and retrofits to protect the environment. The vortex tube produces cold and hot air streams from compressed air without moving parts or affecting the environment.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE (RRL)

I.DEFINITION OF REFRIGERATION TRAINER

The vapour compression refrigeration trainer is an important refrigeration unit of the thermal
lab of the department of mechanical engineering of University institute of technology, the constituent
college of the Rajiv Gandhi technical university, which controls engineering education in the state of
Madhya Pradesh. The vapour compression refrigeration trainer operates on refrigerant R12 which is
most important CFC refrigerant identified for phase out in the country as per its commitment in the
Montreal protocol. The trainer is frequently used for experimentation by graduate and post graduate
students of the department. The institute has been one of the few institutes selected for funding for
research work under World Bank project TEQIP. A research work was undertaken for finding the most
suitable eco-friendly refrigerant for replacing ozone depleting refrigerant R12. In the paper, the
performance evaluation of alternative eco-friendly refrigerants in the vapour compression refrigeration
trainer has been done. Then most suitable refrigerant has been selected for replacing harmful
refrigerant. (Alka & Vipin,2010)

Refrigeration plays an important role in developing countries, primarily for the preservation of
food, medicine, and for air conditioning. Conventional refrigeration systems are using Freon as
refrigerant. As they are the main cause for depletion of ozone layer, extensive research work is going on
alternate refrigeration systems. Vortex tube is a non-conventional cooling device, having no moving
parts which will produce cold air and hot air from the source of compressed air without affecting the
environment. Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning play an important role in modern Human Life. They not
only offer comfortable and healthy living environments but also become a necessity of life to survive for
server weather. The accelerated technical development and economic growth of most counties during
the last century has produced severs environmental problems. Approximately 66 million new
refrigerator and freezers units are manufactured worldwide each year and hundreds of millions are
currently in use. It is anticipated that the production of refrigerator and freezer and the inventory will
substantially increase in the near future due to an increased demand is especially in developing
countries. In order to protect the environment, it is important that the non-CFC refrigeration system
designs are to be incorporated as early as possible and retrofits are to be developed for existing
refrigerators and freezers using suitable substitute refrigerants. The Vortex Tube, is a mechanical device
that separates a compressed gas into hot cold streams. It does not have any moving parts. Pressurized
gas is injected tangentially into a swirl chamber and accelerates to a high rate of rotation. Due to the
conical nozzle at the end of the tube, only the outer shell of the compressed air is allowed to escape at
the end. The remainder of the air is forced to return in an inner vortex of reduced diameter within the
outer vortex. (Tejshree Bornare, Abhishek Badgujar and Prathamesh Natu,2015)
