Element is a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical means (or methods).
Compounds are pure substances composed of two or more different elements that are chemically combined.

Instructions: Using a Venn diagram, compare and differentiate elements and compounds, you can give
examples of each.

A.Water (H2O) Example: Hydrogen (H)  all the things you do at home: drinking,
Oxygen (O) preparing food, bathing, washing clothes and
dishes, brushing your teeth

B. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 6. Carbon (C)  is used as a refrigerant, in fire extinguishers, for
Oxygen (O) inflating life rafts and life jackets, blasting coal,
foaming rubber and plastics, promoting the
growth of plants in greenhouses, immobilizing
animals before slaughter, and in carbonated
beverages.

C. Salt (NaCl) 8. Sodium (Na)  used for flavoring and for preserving food.
Chlorine (Cl)  It has also been used in tanning, dyeing and
bleaching, and the production of pottery, soap,
and chlorine. Today, it is widely used in the
chemical industry.

D. Vinegar (C2H4O2) 10. Carbon (C)  You can use vinegar to clean your microwave;
Hydrogen (H) remove grease; remove mold, mildew, and
Oxygen (O) mineral deposits; clean carpeting;
 as a furniture polish; remove stains on clothing;
remove crayon marks; clean stainless steel;
clean window blinds; remove copper and brass
tarnish; clean glass; and
 use it as a CD cleaner.
E. Sugar (C6H12O6) 12. Carbon (C)  The most important among these are that added
Hydrogen (H) sugar in foods acts as a sweetener, preservative,
Oxygen (O) texture modifier, fermentation substrate,
flavouring and colouring agent, bulking agent.

F. Baking Soda (NaHCO3) 14. Sodium (Na)  Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda,
Hydrogen (H) is used to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or
Carbon (C ) acid indigestion by neutralizing excess stomach
Oxygen (O) acid.
 When used for this purpose, it is said to belong
to the group of medicines called antacids.
