MATHEMATICS 5
FIRST QUARTER:
WEEK 5

I. Overview:
This week covers the lesson of performing operations such as addition and subtraction of
similar/dissimilar fractions with or without regrouping. The real life problems about the topic will also
encounter here. There will be additional trick/technique for the process of solving the problems.
The most important aspect of these lessons is to do the right thing within oneself, especially when
dealing with real-life scenarios in which the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. As in real
life, the numerator is who he is and the denominator is what he/she thinks to himself.

II. Learning Objectives:

The learners are expected to:
▪ recall the basic concept of fractions and LCM;
▪ perform addition and subtraction of similar/dissimilar fractions with or without regrouping;
▪ solve real life problems about adding and subtracting fractions; and
▪ appreciate the value of performing operations involving fractions.

III. Materials Needed:

▪ Multimedia Devices: PowerPoint Presentation, YouTube
▪ Devices: Laptop, Speaker, headset, microphone, radio, etc.
IV. References:
▪ Dulce. (2020). Math for Smart Learners 5. DIWA Learning System Inc. pp 21,37-50
▪ Grade 5 Math Q1 Ep 9 Addition of Fraction Without and With Regrouping. (2021, January 14).

V. Lesson Proper:

A. ACTIVITY:
Session 1: Starter Task
-Work out the given mathematical anagrams.
-Fill the spaces to make equivalent fractions.
-Look for the lowest common multiple of a number (LCM).

Visualizing Fractions
Color in the fractions and add them. Sharing of what they notice on the activity.

Session 2: LAS 5-A: (Consider as PETA) -Add the given fractions and simplify the answer if
possible. On your answer sheet draw and color each scoop of ice cream based on the
flavor for each answer.

Session 3: Picture Analysis #2

Show a picture of siblings helping each other to establish a purpose for the lesson.

Group Worded Problem Activity

Provide each group with a problem to solve about Adding and Subtracting Dissimilar
Fractions and present their answers later on.

Session 4: LAS 5-B: (Consider as PETA) - Answer the e equations inside the balloons. Find the
corresponding letter for each answer in the box below to reveal the secret message.

B. ANALYSIS:
Session 1: Adding and Subtracting Similar Fractions
▪ How do you find the starter task? Were you able to identify the things you already
master? If yes, what are those?
▪ How do we differentiate proper to improper fractions?
▪ How to convert improper fractions to mixed number and vice versa?
▪ How do we add and subtract similar fractions?
Key Question
▪ How do the steps of adding and subtracting similar fractions help you to solve a word
problem?

Session 3: Adding and Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions

▪ How do we change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions?
▪ Do you help your sister at home? How?
▪  How do we add and subtract dissimilar fractions?
Key Question:
▪ How do the steps of adding and subtracting dissimilar fractions help you to solve your
assigned word problem?

C. ABSTRACTION
Session 1: Adding and Subtracting Similar Fractions
 Similar fractions are fractions with the same denominators.
 Steps of adding and subtracting similar fractions
-Copy the denominator.
-Add/Subtract the numerators.
-Add/Subtract the whole numbers (if the given are mixed numbers).
- Simplify the answer if possible. Write the answer in lowest term. (Dulce, 2020).

Session 3: Adding and Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions

 Dissimilar fractions are fractions with different denominators. So, when adding or
subtracting dissimilar fractions, you cannot just copy the denominators of the
fractions because their denominators. Remember that denominators should not be
added or subtracted when performing addition or subtraction of fractions. (Dulce,
2020).
D. APPLICATION
 Performing operations on fractions 1-5 equations under time pressure.
▪ Group Activity: Solving real life problems involving addition and subtraction of
similar/dissimilar fractions.
E. CLOSURE
THREE W’S
Learners will answer the following questions:
-What have you learned today?
-So What? (Importance, relevancy, usefulness)
-Where are we going? (Predict the next lesson)

VI. Assessment
Session 2: LAS #5: Ice Cream Map
Session 4: LAS #5: Balloon Map

VII. Assignment/Announcement
Make sure to submit your works on time.
