: A study of how Twitter comments

affect the personal feelings of Grade 12 stem students at

FAITH Fidelis Senior High School.

INTRODUCTION

Are teenage students among those who often scroll through news articles or social

media posts and can't help but read the comments below? Don't worry, this is a common

weakness of an individual. People like to hear the wisdom of the crowd from time to

time, either out of boredom or out of curiosity. However, browsing reviews is not a

trivial hobby. Psychology has a lot to say about personal opinions online and how they

affect us.

In the digital world, Twitter has recently emerged as one of the most essential platforms

for information dissemination. Users on this platform can utilize brief and direct

communications to express their ideas and opinions, promote their findings, and argue

with millions of other users. As a result, there is a massive and constant flow of

information, and any insignificant message could quickly become a global hot subject

(Murthy, 2013).

To begin with, Twitter is a type of microblogging and social networking website based in

the United States that allows users to send and receive messages known as "tweets".

Moreover, unregistered users can only read publicly visible tweets, while registered

users can write, like, and retweet tweets. In addition, Twitter is accessed by the browser
or mobile user applications, as well as programmatically via its APIs. Also, some people

utilized this service to interact and to communicate with their loved ones all over the

world, in as many different countries as possible. Meanwhile, you can also use Twitter

for business and most individuals use this to sell and advertise things as well as in

gaining clients. On the other hand, some people use this application to make

acquaintances and start relationships, while others use it to share their thoughts,

emotions, and feelings.

For instance, respondents used the platform for advocacy, keeping up with current

issues, professional information, news, and exposure to new ideas (Camiel,

Goldman-Levine, Kostka-Rokosz, & McCloskey, 2014; Greenhalgh et al., 2016;

Nicholson & Galguera, 2013; Rehm & Notten, 2016). Twitter also provided students a

more comfortable atmosphere for information sharing. Students also felt more at ease

with sharing information and opinions in person, also allowing students to comment on

each other’s posts sharing further insights (Gooding et al., 2016; Lin et al., 2013; Sinclair

et al., 2015; Tiernan, 2014; Wright, Frame, & Hartzler, 2014). In addition to creating a

community, Twitter serves as a platform to help students combat isolation and shyness.

Twitter supports the participation of shy students in a more active manner (Cohen &

Duchan, 2012; Kinnison et al., 2017; Mercier et al., 2015; Tiernan, 2014). Many students

expressed that they would not have shared their opinions otherwise if they had not been

using Twitter (Fox & Varadarajan, 2011). Due to its capability to hold online

conversations, it diminishes the sense of isolation in online classes which strongly

supports the personal development of individual students (Munoz et al., 2014; Rehm &

Notten, 2016). Similarly, the study by Wright (2010) also indicates that Twitter is
helpful in reducing isolation and boosting self-confidence among the learning

community.

Twitter is a social interaction and communication platform. Furthermore, twitter allows

neurotic people to express their anxieties. Because of that, twitter has become an open

diary and journal for anyone who rants about someone or things they are stressed out

about. Twitter also has become a method of cyberbullying, while some people target

their personal emotions and feelings for revenge. Since Twitter is open to everyone,

they might reveal your secrets where you wouldn't want others to find out. As a result,

Some social media users removed this app due to people's toxic behavior because

instead of spreading love and positivity, they chose to spread negativity and hateful

comments to attack others.

Teen students and adults are the most common users of Twitter, they honestly share

their ideas on Twitter, where they may get negative or good side remarks that may

impact their feelings. Hence, sometimes most people are unable to manage their

emotions or feelings to the fact that they don't think before they post, share, or

comments online to other people which most of the time their comments are out of the

line, for example, body shaming, saying mean and harsh words to other people which

may lead to them to overthink, doubt their self, anxiety and in the worst-case situation,

it may lead to depression. Lastly, it can also be helpful through getting factual and

accurate pieces of information, especially in our times today.

To sum it up, Twitter is a popular social media platform that connects people and allows

them to share their ideas with a large audience. This topic focuses on how Twitter

influences an individual's feelings, specifically the feelings of Grade 12 students at

FAITH Fidelis Senior High School. The researchers chose to focus on a topic that also
emphasizes how a person's feelings can be influenced by a simple comment or post that

they relate to or is specifically about them. With specific details on how teens handle any

negative comments they may receive from this social network platform.

Practically, the findings of this study will be extremely beneficial to the grade 12 stem

students at Faith Fidelis Senior High, as they will encourage students to leave more

positive comments and be more mindful of what they post. This will assist them in

becoming more aware of how their personal opinions and judgments of others influence

an individual. It will also benefit individuals who are prone to shaming and who live in a

judgmental society. Because of some harshful comments, it can motivate them to be a

better version of themselves. Additionally, student feedback has to do with determining

whether these Twitter comments significantly affect their feelings, which could be

considered harmful or beneficial.
