Math!
Ms. Kayla
Second Graders
-Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. In second grade, students realize that doing
mathematics involves solving problems and discussing how they solved them. Students explain to themselves
the meaning of a problem and look for ways to solve it. They may use concrete objects or pictures to help them
conceptualize and solve problems. They may check their thinking by asking themselves, “Does this make
sense?” They make conjectures about the solution and plan out a problem-solving approach. An example for
this might be giving a student an equation and having him/her write a story to match.
-Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Younger students recognize that a number represents a specific
quantity. They connect the quantity to written symbols. Quantitative reasoning entails creating a representation
of a problem while attending to the meanings of the quantities. Second graders begin to know and use different
properties of operations and relate addition and subtraction to length. In second grade students represent
situations by decontextualizing tasks into numbers and symbols. For example, in the task, “There are 25
children in the cafeteria, and they are joined by 17 more children. How many students are in the cafeteria?”
Students translate the situation into an equation, such as: 25 + 17 = and then solve the problem. Students also
contextualize situations during the problem-solving process. For example, while solving the task above,
students might refer to the context of the task to determine that they need to subtract 19 if 19 children leave.
Lesson Summary:
We will be trying to think more critically with mathematics. We will be learning more of the “why”, why we
did what we did to solve the problem and the meaning. We will also learn what helps us understand how to
solve the problem besides memorizing the equations. To expand more on that they will learn and better
understand one to one correspondent.
Estimated Duration:
Commentary:
May have trouble figuring out the way certain students learn concerning mathematics. Since different students
learn in different ways it will be a time to not follow our peers and find out how individually they can grasp the
information. To try and keep my student’s attention I will let them get creative with their problem solving.
Maybe incorporating their classmates to give more of a visual. For example, if some students do not
understand what 2+2 equals, we can make up a story that involves more of a reenactment of the story that can
concern the story involving the equation.
Instructional Procedures: (This will be one of the most detailed sections of this assignment).
Day 1:
Students will get out their computer or some form of technology (that isn’t their phone) to get onto the link I
sent them to get onto Whiteboard.fi (5 min)
The students will get out a scratch piece of paper and a pencil. They will then be taking the short pre
assessment to see what they already know. As they take this assessment although I can see their screen I will
go around and try to answer as many individual questions any may have to help with clarification. (20 min).
They will then write their name on scratch piece of paper and turn into me before moving on from this subject.
(2 min)
Day 2:
We will then begin to review the basics of addition and subtraction and the properties of each. Rather than
assuming they remember the basics a quick review will help avoid some confusion. (20min)
Can’t forget about the equal sign! We will do an activity with a scale to understand that an equal sign means
the numbers on each side are the same. (20 min)
Day 3:
We will learn some strategies we can use to add and subtract double digit numbers. We will work on writing it
down, using popsicle sticks, and any more hands-on materials. Learning about place value will help us a lot
when thinking of easier ways to add and subtract numbers mentally and physically. (50 min)
Day 4:
We will be put into small groups for this main activity today (5min)
Each group will be given some equations to try and turn into a word problem that can be acted out. This will be
an opportunity for their peers to help some members that are a little more confused than others. I will also be
going around class to help. (30min)
Groups will present (15min)
(This will help understand more how math is in our real life.)
Day 5:
Compose and decompose numbers in different ways.
We will work as a class to try and compose and decompose numbers. This is important for understanding more
of different angles of addition and subtraction. Giving the students a new viewpoint on how to use this concept
and understand better/more. (40min)
Day 6:
Bonus day. We will take our post assessment to make sure everyone is ready to move on.
Pre-Assessment:
We will begin with a quick quiz over some key concepts on whiteboard.fi this is apart of the many features of
the website Kahoot! The questions will be a little simpler than the end assessment for I will be only trying to
get an idea of what concepts to spend more time on during the week. Aside from this assessment in the
beginning of the week each day I will have problems that will be a warmup to what they will be learning that
day, concerning math.
Scoring Guidelines:
This assessment is less of a grade and more of a way for me to know what to expect. The results I collect will
help me know what to spend more time on teaching to try and help my students understand the criteria. Some
of my lesson plan may be modified and some may stay the same.
Post-Assessment:
Again, after we are done with the topic we are learning, the Monday the next week we will take an assessment
on Whiteboard.fi on Kahoot. Because some work throughout the week when learning the concept, I will not
make this graded. This is only to make sure my students understood what we learned and are ready to move
onto the next.
Scoring Guidelines:
When scoring this criteria, some will just be graded on the small quizzes every other day that is given to the
students to help know if they understand. Since they are second graders most of their grade in the end will be
either a pass or fail. If they fail, they will get extra help to help them succeed. That will mainly be decided
based on observation. I feel you know how well students know the information by observing them in their
natural environment rather than only counting on a piece of paper they filled out. Just how students learn
differently, some test differently as well.
Differentiated Instructional Support
I will lean on Kahoot during most of this topic. If a few students are having trouble understanding a topic I will
make a Kahoot on “Kahoot.it” where they can have extra practice over the certain concepts that are not being
grasped while also competing and having fun with classmates. By doing this I hope to move past the
frustration that might have come with not understanding. If there is a smaller number of students struggling
Additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
one-on-one time with me to work on what they are struggling with during the student’s free time in the
day.
“Number Search” worksheet (like a crossword puzzle but with numbers)
Take home work to help give one extra practice may benefit some as well.
Extension
Any work sent home to students will be for extra practice. This will be more of a completion grade, and we
will always go over it during class the next day to make sure they have the correct answers and understand. I
will also have on my blog an overview on the lesson plan for parents to help their kids at home.
Interdisciplinary Connections
Reading and writing: Since we will be trying to understand more of the why and how, students will be
making up their own story that goes with the addition or subtraction equation. Most of those stories will
be written down.
Social skills: As we will learn addition and subtraction, we will be given times to act out an equation in
person to give more of a visual. This will be Infront of the class and help show good self-control to take
the assignment seriously.
For teachers Smartboard, computer, worksheets, base ten blocks, paper, scale
For students Smartboard, iPad/laptop/phone (some form of technology device), base ten blocks,
color pencils, pencil, paper, popsicle sticks,
Key Vocabulary
Addition, subtraction, equation(s), plus sign, equal sign, subtraction sign, sum, difference
Additional Notes
A lot of the work may seem repetitive throughout the week, but it is intentional and to help the students grasp
the criteria/concept throughout the week. I also plan to add based on needs of each student each day.
