Problem Set 8 Biot Savart Problems
Question 1. A ring of radius R with total charge Q, uniformly distributed, is made to spin in the
xy plane about its axis of symmetry with an angular speed ω. When looked from top, the disk spins
in the counter-clockwise direction. Find the magnetic field on the axis of the ring a distance z away
from the center of the ring.
Question 2. The Magnetic field in the vicinity of a neutron star can be very strong. While neutrons
have no charge, in the following you will attempt to model the field from the star by considering
the neutron star to be a spinning thin disk of radius R. The charge density of your model increases
linearly with the distance from the center with it being 0 in the center and the total charge is Q
on the disk. If your model spins about the main axis of symmetry (perpendicular to the plane of
the disk) with angular frequency, , find the magnetic field a distance of 2R from the center on
the axis. Clearly show your thinking as your setup your solution. Setup the integral in terms of one
variable but do not evaluate it.
Question 3. A cylindrical shell of radius “a” has surface charge density
ρ0 spread uniformly on the curved surface. The cylinder has a length L.
It rotates about its axis (the z- axis) with angular frequency, ω, in
counterclockwise direction as seen from +z direction.
Calculate the value of magnetic field intensity, B, at a distance z0 from the
center of the cylinder. Represent the answer in terms of the angles, α and β as
shown in the figure.
Question 4. A wire is bend in shape as shown in the figure below and carries a current I flowing
counterclockwise. Calculate the magnetic field at point P.
Question 5. The magnetic field at point P is equal to:
1. A Semicircle
2. A semicircle plus the field of an infinite long wire
3. A semicircle minus the field of an infinite long wire
4. None of the above.
Question 6. Find the magnetic field at point P for the following configurations.
Question 7.
A wire carrying current I (counter-clockwise) is bent into a shape of an exponential spiral given by 𝑟 = 𝑒 𝜃
where r is the radius of the curve for angle . To finish the loop, the wire is brought back to origin along
the x-axis at the end of the spiral (=2).
(a) Draw the spiral curve.
(b) Calculate the magnetic field at the origin. (Hint: What is the angle between the tangent at point and the
line connecting the point to the center of the curve, the curve is not a circle).
Question 8.
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged with volume density 𝜌𝑣 = 𝜌0 . Sphere is rotating about its axis
with angular frequency, . Calculate the value and direction of magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
