A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 10 - Plate - Boundaries

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a science class on plate tectonic boundaries. The objectives are for students to define and differentiate the three types of plate boundaries, create 3D models of each, and understand the importance of studying plate tectonics. The lesson plan outlines the learning procedures which include introducing the topic through a video, defining key terms, discussing the three types of boundaries through pictures (divergent, convergent via subduction and collision), and explaining the geological effects of each.

Science 10
(Different Types of Plate Boundaries)

CYRIL BAUA CAUILAN
Pre-Service Teacher
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the learners should be able to:
a.) Define and Differentiate the three types of plate boundaries.
b.) Create a 3D Model of the three types of Plate Tectonic
Boundaries
c.) Value the importance of studying the types of plate tectonic
boundaries

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Different Types of Plate Boundaries
B. Reference: Science LM – Grade 10; Unit 1-Module 1 : Types of
Palte Boundaries pp 14-15
C. Materials: Powerpoint, Pictures, Videos
D. Teaching Strategy: Learner-centered, Constructivist, Collaborative,
Spiral Progression Approach, Developmentally
Appropriate, Responsive and Relevant
E. Time Allotment: 60 minutes

III. Learning Procedure

a. Preliminary
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
1. Classroom Conditioning
(Play a music for 3 minutes)
(As the music plays, the students
will:
1 – mute their microphone
2 – prepare their own selves
2. Prayer 3 – are now ready to pray
Let us pray.

(The students will pray)

3. Greetings
Good morning, class!

Good morning sir. Its nice to see you.

Thank you sir
4. Checking of Attendance
As I call your name please
open your camera and turn it off
after.
Who is not present on this
meeting?
Is there anyone who I did not
in the meeting today?

None sir

5. Checking of Assignments
Class, do we have an
assignment

None, sir

b. Recall
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Yesterday, we have discussed
earthquakes.
Determining the location of
earthquake epicenters plays a vital
role in laying the foundations of plate
tectonics.

So who can define what is tectonic

plate again?
Plate tectonics is the hypothesis that
Earth's outer shell is separated into
enormous slabs of solid rock called
"plates" that glide across the rocky
inner layer above the core, the
mantle. It allows the lithosphere to
move around by lubricating the
undersides of Earth's tectonic plates.

Excellent

Who can again define what is

earthquake? An earthquake occurs when stored
energy in the Earth's crust is released
suddenly, causing seismic waves.
Earthquakes can cause ground
shaking or displacement at the
Earth's surface. They can sometimes
cause tsunamis, which can result in
loss of life and property destruction.

Excellent. You can still remember the

definition of an earthquakes.

c. Motivation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Before we start discussing, let us watch this video
together. After watching the video let us try to answer
the following questions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=edb7FMcGrAE&t=39s

1. How does earthquakes forms?

2. Explain how movement of plates creates
earthquakes?
1. Earthquake
s forms
when plates
move
2. As the
plates pass
by each
other, they
can become
trapped,
causing
pressure to
build up.
Energy is
released as
seismic
waves when
the plates
ultimately
give and
slip as a
result of the
increased
pressure,
causing the
ground to
shake. This
is a natural
disaster.

d. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Look closer into these pictures.

Convergent

Who can tell me what plate

boundaries the first picture is?
The first picture shows the
divergent plate boundaries.
How does divergent plate boundary
occur?
Wherein plates move apart,
creating a zone of tension as
represented by the directions of the
arrows
Excellent
When two plates move away from
each other, this is what happens.
New crust is formed as molten rock
from the mantle erupts along the
opening. Divergent plate motion
created the Great Rift Valley in
Africa, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of
Aden.

How about the second picture?

The second picture represents the
convergent

Who can explain in the class how

does convergent plate boundaries
occur?
Base on the arrows, the plates are
moving towards each other.
This is an example of a zone where
plates collide

What do you think will be formed

when two plates collide?
formation of huge, high mountain
ranges such as the Himalayas.
There are two forms of convergent
boundaries, we have the subduction
and collision.

How does subduction occur?

When a continental plate collides
with an oceanic plate, the oceanic
plate dips beneath the thicker,
more rigid continental plate
because it is thinner, denser, and
more flexible.
That’s right. As you can see in the
picture there is an arrow heading
upward and arrow heading
downward. The arrow that points
upward is the continental plate
while the arrow pointing downward
is the oceanic plate.

When subduction convergent plate

boundaries happened, what does it
forms?
Deep ocean trenches form as a
result of subduction, such as the
one off the west coast of South
America.

The continent's dragged-down

rocks begin to dissolve. Sometimes
molten rock comes to the surface
and forms a line of volcanoes
throughout the continent.
Brilliant class. How about the next
form which is the collision?
Two continental plates meet head-
on
When two continental plates collide,
what does it forms?
Both plates collapse and are
pushed up since neither is
stronger than the other. As a
result, massive, high mountain
ranges, such as the Himalayas,
can emerge.

How about the last picture?

Based on the arrows in the
pictures, the type of boundary
presented is transform plate
boundary

Very good.

When two tectonic plates slide past

each other, the place where they
meet is a transform or lateral fault

How does Transform plate boundary

occur?
Transform fault boundary occurs
when plates slide or grind past
each other without diverging or
converging
And what does forms?
The San Andreas Fault is one of
the best examples of lateral plate
motion.
The San Andreas faut is bounded by
the North American
plate and the Pacific plate.

Do you have any question class

about our discussion today?
None sir.
If none then, for your activity, I will
divide the class into three groups.
Each group will create a 3D Model
of the different types of Plate
Boundaries and present it to the
class
For Group 1 you will create
Transform Boundaries
For Group 2 you will create
Divergent Boundaries
For Group 3 you will create
Convergent showing subduction and
collision form.

You will be graded through this

rubric

Okay class you are given 15

minutes to work on your activity Possible output of the students

Divergent plate boundaries occurs

when plates move apart. Two
plates move away from each other

Convergent. This occurs when

plates move towards each other
and collide. There are two forms of
Convergent boundaries: the
Collision and Subduction.

Subduction occurs when a

continental plate meets an oceanic
plate, the thinner, denser, and
more flexible oceanic plate sinks
beneath the thicker, more rigid
continental plate

Collision occurs when two

continental plates meet head-on.
Since neither plate is stronger than
the other, they crumple and are
pushed up

Transform Boundaries when two

tectonic plates slide past each
other. Where plates slide or grind
past each other without diverging
or converging

What an excellent output. Let us do

the Aling Dionisia Clap.

For your individual class I want you

to create a simple slogan on the
importance of studying the different
types of Plate Boundaries Learners may have a varied

utilized to grade their activity)
