Readings in Philippine History Task 3: Content and Contextual Analysis of Primary Sources
Directions: Imagine you are reading two articles, both on the topic of restoration of the Bataan Nuclear
Power Plant. One article argues that the operation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant should be
stopped because it is dangerous and harmful to the environment. The other article has opposite point
of view: it declares that the operation of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant should be increased because it is
one of the reliable sources of energy.
B. EXPLORATION OF KNOWLEDGE. Answer the following questions. Write your answers in the
spaces provided below. 1. Who is Antonio Pigafetta?
- Antonio Pigafetta was born into a wealthy Vicenza family, and among other things, he studied
navigation. He served on the Knights of Rhodes galleys and accompanied the papal nuncio,
Monsignor Chieregati, to Spain. Later, he traveled to the Maluku Islands with the Portuguese
captain Ferdinand Magellan and his Spanish crew. Magellan was killed and Pigafetta was
injured in the Philippines. Pigafetta was one of the 18 men who made the complete trip,
returning to Spain in 1522, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, out of the
approximately 240 who set out three years earlier. These men completed the first
circumnavigation of the world. Others mutinied and returned in the first year. Pigafetta's
surviving journal is the source for much of what is known about Magellan and Elcano's
voyage. At least one warship of the Italian Navy, a destroyer of the Navigatori class, was
named after him in 1931.Pigafetta was one of the 18 men who made the complete trip,

2. What is the connection to Ferdinand Magellan?
- The connection between Ferdinand Magellan and Antonio Pigafetta is that, Antion Pigafetta,
an Italian scholar and explorer, joined the expedition to the Spice Islands led by explorer
Ferdinand Magellan under the flag of Emperor Charles V and the subsequent voyage around
the world after Magellan's death in the Philippine Islands. During the expedition, he assisted
Magellan and kept an accurate journal, which later helped him translate the Cebuano
language. It is the first written record of the language.
3. What are the different works and writings of Antonio Pigafetta?
- This manuscript volume, dating from around 1525, details Ferdinand Magellan's voyage
around the world in 1519-22. The work is attributed to Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian scholar
who was born in Vincenza, Italy, around 1490 and who accompanied Magellan on the
voyage. Pigafetta kept a detailed journal, the original of which is lost. However, an account
of the voyage, written by Pigafetta between 1522 and 1525, survives in four manuscript
versions: one in Italian and three in French. This version, in French, is from the library of Yale
University, and is the most complete and handsomely produced of the four surviving
manuscripts. It includes 23 beautifully drawn and illuminated maps. Pigafetta’s work is
important not only as a source of information about the voyage itself, but also includes an
early Western description of the people and languages of the Philippines. Of the
approximately 240 men who set out with Magellan, Pigafetta was one of only 18 who returned
to Spain. Magellan himself was killed, on April 27, 1521, in a battle on Mactan Island, the
Philippines, which Pigafetta witnessed and recounts in this work. Antonio Pigafetta also wrote
a book, in which a detailed account of the voyage was given. It is quite unclear when it was
first published and what language had been used in the first edition. Antonio Pigafetta also
wrote at least two books, both of which have survived: Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al
mondo (1524-1525); Regole sull'arte del navigare (1524-1525) (contained in Andrea Da
Mosto, ed. (1894). Il primo viaggio intorno al globo di Antonio Pigafetta e le sue regole
sull'arte del navigare.).
