1. A complete environmental sampling design consists of three key points for
the samples to be representative samples. a. List these key points b. Describe these points using an example of your own. 2. The main environmental matrices are soil, water and air. These matrices have a heterogenic chemical composition, which promotes a large variation in their properties, functionality, and interaction with pollutants. Despite the availability of advanced techniques as separation and detection, sampling and sample preparation are steps that require attention for the analyses of pollutants in environmental matrices. The right choice of both methods will lead to the efficiency of the analytical approach applied. Based on these facts, briefly describe the general considerations of sample collection from these environmental matrices. Elaborate with example of collecting samples of pollutants (chemicals) from the matrices. 3. Characterize a unimodal distribution in terms of the area under the curve, mode, median and mean when it is: a. normal distribution; b. non normal distribution with Negative skewness; and c. non normal distribution with positive skewness. 2
4. The analysis results of a response variable and a predicator variable using a
simple linear regression of Model A are: SS Error = 132; DF Error = 2; SS Total = 216; and MS Total compute (show your steps!) a. MSE (MS Error) b. R2 and what percent of variation is contributed by the SLR model? c. R2(adj) and what percent of variation is contributed by the SLR model? d. Suppose the R2 of SLR model B is 0.78 for the same dataset, which model better describes the data, Model A or Model B? Why?
5. An Environmental Engineer wants to understand how several predictors, P1-P4
are associated with a response variable, R. The engineer examines 32 environmental matrices at different predicators of P1, P2, P3, and P4. The response variable, R, measured values are recorded. The engineer performed MLR analysis to fit the predicators using a statistical package and obtained the following analysis results
b. Describe the contribution of each of the predicators with relation to the response variable, R. c. Which of predicators i. have significant effect on the response variable, R? Justify your answer. ii. have no significant effect on the response variable R? Why? iii. Write the MLR fit for those predicators that have significant effect on R. d. What is the importance of performing MLR analysis?
