Background Information for Learners
Management is the process of coordinating and overseeing the work performance of individuals working
together in organizations, so that they effectively accomplish their chosen aims/goals.

Management is the process of reaching organizational goals by working with and through people
and other organizational resources and has the following characteristics:
 It is a process or series of continuous and related activities.
 It involves and concentrates on reaching organizational goals.
 It strives for organizational goals by working with and through people and other
organizational resources.

There are 5 Basic Management functions are the following:


 Planning
 Organizing
 Staffing
 Leading, and
 Controlling
Management has been progressively evaluated through the
following theories:
1. The Classical Theory - 3 main thought Bureaucratic, Scientific And Administrative Management
2. The Neo-Classical Theory – also referred to as behavioral science approach
3. Management Science Theory – it’s has 4 branches namely Quantitative Management, Operations
Management, Total Quality Management and Management Information System
4. Organizational Environmental Theory- focuses on the need to study external environment
5. The System Management Approach – this approach was applied to wartime problems
6. Contingency Theory – also known as situational approach
