Captain james Cook was born in England in 1728. He joined the Royal Navy as a young
man and quickly rose threw the ranks. Due to his skills at navigating and making maps
he was entrusted with the role of captain on the Endeavour voyage. the purpose of the
voyage was too observe the planet Venus passing through the earth and the sun from the
southern hemisphere. Before Cook left on his voyage he was handed a envelope with secret
instructions. These instructions were to explore the great undiscovered southern continent,
‘New Holland’, known today as Australia.

After observing Venus from Tahiti Captain Cook and his crew set off for New Holland. On
the way they reached New Zealand. Captain Cook successfully mapped thecoastlines of
the North and South Islands of New Zealand. after leaving New Zealand Cook and his crew
sailed towards Australia. They sailed along the east coast before landing in Botany Bay.
On 29th April 1770 Captain Cook made it to shore in Australia for the first time.

Captain Cook returned to England safely before undertaking other voyages He made the
first ricorded crossing of the Antarctic. He died in Hawaii while undertaking his final
