Scratch - Classroom Lesson Plan 1

This lesson teaches students how to create algorithms to animate spelling words in Scratch. Students will be given focus word cards and use multiple sprites in Scratch to add movement to each letter as the word is spelled. The lesson links to Australian curriculum outcomes in English, digital technologies, and media arts. Students will first review spelling words with the teacher then work independently on their Scratch projects before sharing and providing feedback on each other's work.

Lesson: Building and Spelling

Learning Intention: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to produce algorithms that create a movement
animation for their selected spelling words.

Links to Australian Curriculum Outcomes: General Capabilities:

● English: Understand how to spell one and ● Information and Communications Technology
two-syllable words with common letter patterns (ICT)
(ACELA1778) ○ Generate solutions to challenges and
● Digital Technologies Processes and learning area tasks
Production Skills: Follow, describe and ● Critical and Creative Thinking
represent a sequence of steps and decisions ○ Imagine possibilities and connect ideas
(algorithms) needed to solve simple problems ○ Apply logic and reasoning
(ACTDIP004) ● Literacy
● Digital Technologies Knowledge and ○ Use spelling knowledge
Understanding: ● Numeracy
● Media Arts: Create and present media artworks ○ Interpret maps and diagrams
that communicate ideas and stories to an
audience (ACAMAM056)

Materials: Differentiation:
● Focus Word Cards ● Students who want to be extended may be
● Scratch encouraged to practise with longer words and
● Student Device (Ipad or laptop) encouraged to include a higher range of
movements.
Expected Knowledge: ● Students who require additional support may be
● Previously used Scratch and have a sound encouraged to use smaller words with short
understanding of its functionality. movement sequences.

Sequence:

Introduction

Students will sit on the floor with the teacher. The teacher will then work through the focus word cards for the class
and ask them to read out each word back to her as she works through them. Once complete, students will be
asked to return to their desks and open scratch.

Development

The teacher will provide each student with a focus word card. The student will then be required to create their
focus word on scratch, using multiple sprites. The students will also be required to add movement to each letter as
the word is spelt, using the block code builder.

Conclusion

Once each student has completed the task, they are encouraged to share it with the other members of the class.

Once complete, the teacher will ask them to think about what they saw and what others did. As an exit slip, each
student needs to let the teacher know the following:
1. One difficulty they had
2. One other project they liked (not their own)
3. What they would like to do next time.
