Math Grade 70 92 80 74 65 83 English Grade 74 84 63 87 78 90

The document summarizes computing and testing the correlation between math and English grades for 6 students. Manually, the correlation coefficient (R) was calculated to be 0.240. Using SPSS, R was also 0.240. A hypothesis test was conducted to determine if the population correlation is different than 0. With a p-value of 2.766, greater than the significance level of 0.05, the null hypothesis was not rejected, indicating no significant relationship between math and English grades.

Activity 1.

Directions: Compute manually and by software (SPSS) the correlation coefficient for the following
grades of 6 students selected at random.
Math Grade   70        92        80        74        65        83
English Grade 74        84        63        87        78        90

Test the significance of the correlation coefficient manually and by SPSS

x y xy X2 Y2
70 74 5180 4900 5476
92 84 7728 8464 7056
80 63 5040 6400 3969
74 87 6438 5476 7569
65 78 5070 4225 6084
83 90 7470 6889 8100
∑ x =464 ∑ y=476 ∑ xy =36,926 ∑ x 2=36,354 ∑ y2 =38,254
SOLUTION MANUALLY:
N= 6
R= 0.240
t0=0.49

X VALUES Y VALUES

∑ x =464 ∑ y=476
MEAN=77.333 MEAN=79.333

∑ (x−Mx)2=SSx =471.333 ∑ ( y−M y)2 =SS y =4 91.333

115.333
R=
√ (471.333)(491.333)
X AND Y COMBINED
= 0.2397
∑ (x−Mx )( y−My)=115.333
R =0.240

HYPOTHESIS: Ho: P=0

Ha: P ≠ 0 (two tailed) SIGNIFICANCE
= 0.05

to = 0.49

P= Pr (lt4l > 0.49)

= 2.766

SOLUTION USING SPSS:

Correlations
Math Grade English Grade
Math Grade Pearson Correlation 1 .240
Sig. (2-tailed) .647
N 6 6
English Grade Pearson Correlation .240 1
Sig. (2-tailed) .647
N 6 6

The null hypothesis is not rejected having p=2.766 ≥ 0.05. As a result of the above solutions, it can be determined
that there is insufficient evidence to declare that the population correlation p is different than zero at the a= 0.05
significance level. Thus, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between Math grade and
English grade.
