WHAT’S MORE

Becoming your Own Boss

The thought of a part-time work may conjure up images of bussing dishes, pumping gas, bagging
groceries or running a cash register. But there are other ways to make money. You might consider
becoming your own employer by painting houses, gardening or tutoring. Working for yourself, you can
make more money than in conventional jobs, and you can have flexible hours.

Some of you may argue that working for yourself takes a great deal of planning and investment.
Although these views are valid, the problems are all surmountable. There are various ways that you can
find customers: through community contacts, friends, and business acquaintances, and clubs and
religious groups. You can advertise for little money in local newspapers. You can place free ads on
bulletin boards in stores, community centers, local businesses, and schools. You will find that probably
find that neighbors will lend you necessary equipment reasonably. Sometimes you can get secondhand
machines cheaply through want ads. And once set-up, a service business provides profitable and
convenient work.

By performing useful services, you may fine that you earn more than the minimum wage. Many
people today pay others to do their household work. Working people, for example, can pay as much as
P400 for the whole day of house cleaning. They will pay at least that much for heavy work done such as
window cleaning, floor polishing, rug and upholstery shampooing, and washing clothes.

The real advantage of running a business might be working when and as much as you want. You
can adjust working hours to fit your study time and extracurricular activities. You might work only on
long weekends, minding people’s houses, watering their lawns or caring for pets.

When you consider working for yourself, you can see that the possibilities for making the most
money in the time you have depends on how creative, enterprising and conscientious you are. You
might find your service business so lucrative that you can share it with other students, perhaps by hiring
them to work for you or increase it to full in the summer. Rather be discouraged about part-time job
market for students, remember that clerking in a store, flipping hamburgers, and answering phones are
not your only choice.
