Basic Laboratory Techniques

The document summarizes an experiment on basic laboratory techniques. It describes manipulating a Bunsen burner and measuring the volume and weight of liquids and solids using various glassware like graduated cylinders, flasks, and balances. It lists the standard and other units used to measure length, volume, mass, and temperature. The conclusion states the importance of safety protocols and familiarity with laboratory tools to reduce risks.

Experiment 1

Basic Laboratory Techniques

Name: Caroline G. Gabriel

Section: BSCE 1-1

Data

A.Manipulation of the Bunsen Burner

Compare the flame produced by the burner before opening the air holes to that obtained after
allowing enough air to mix with the gas.
When the air holes were opened, the more condensed the flames got.

B. Measurement of Volume
What are the laboratory glasswares that are used in measuring liquid?
1. Graduated cylinder
2. flasks
3. burette/s
4. Volumetric pipets
5. beaker

How are we going to measure colored and colorless liquid?

Just separate the colored from the colorless liquid and proceed to the process. Although
they both have the same process, as a result it is harder to measure the colorless liquid
because we are unable to see clearly if it is at it’s right measurement.

C. Measurement of Weight
What are the laboratory glasswares that are used in measuring weights?
1. Digital scale balance
2. Analytical balance
3. Weighing bottle
4. Triple beam balance
5. Graduated cylinder/s
What are the precautions that we have to follow when measuring solid samples?
1. Minimize all chemical exposure.
2. Avoid skin and eye contact with all chemicals.
3. Place the measuring devices that you are going to use in a flat or stable surface.
4. Always handle with care.
5. Make sure to always calibrate the measuring tool before using it.

D. Name the standard unit of measurement used in scientific investigation of length, volume,
mass and temperature. What other units are used for each of these?
Standard Unit Other Units

A. length Meter (m) Millimeter (mm), Centimeter

(cm), kilometer (km)

B. volume Cubic Meter (m3) Gallons (gal), Cubic

Centimeter (cm3), Liters (L)

C. mass Kilogram (kg) Gram (g)

D. temperature Kelvin (K) Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F)

Conclusion
What have you learned on this topic?
I learned that knowing the safety protocols and its importance can reduce the
risks of being in danger. Becoming familiar with the laboratory tools allows a person to avoid
potential dangers and eliminate hazards.
