Dr.) Stefanos Alexopoulos Introduction Its indeed a great privilege for me to offer this article in honor of Stefano Parenti on the occasion of his 50" birthday. Parenti’s con- tribution to the field of Byzantine liturgical history is beyond any question very significant, bringing our attention to the sources and listening to what they say about the history of Byzantine Liturgy. A particular and unique characteristic of Parenti’s work is his knowledge and use of Modern Greek liturgical scholarship and, of course, his ability to read, write and speak Modern Greek (among many other lan- guages) The knowledge of Modern Greek is slowly but gradually becoming, more and more important in the ficld of Byzantine liturgical history, as Modern Greek liturgical scholarship is producing important works. At the Second International Congress of the Society of Oriental Lit- urgy in Rome (17-21 September, 2008) I presented a paper titled “The State of Modern Greek Liturgical Studies and Research: A Preli- minary Survey”. There, I argued that “the pioneers of liturgical studies have opened the way to the newer generation and have assisted in changing the attitude towards liturgy, liturgical studies and liturgical reform. More and more the field of liturgy is not seen as just the study of rubrics and ritual performance, but is seen as a field to itself, worthy of attention, study and research. The importance, effect and dynamic of liturgy in the life of the Church are acknowledged and the call to liturgical renewal has never been louder.”"! This shift is reflected in the scholarship produced in the last de cade. In this paper, I will provide a selective bibliography of publica- tions of liturgical interest in the last ten years, primarily works of the “newer generation” of Greek liturgists. This presentation of Greek "To be published in Basilius J. Groen and Steven Hawkes Teeples (eds), Inquiries into Eastern Christian Worship: Acts of the Second Intemational Congress ofthe Society of Oriental Liturgy, Rome, 17 ~ 21 September 2008, Eastern Christian Studies, Vol. 10 (Leuven: Peeters, 2009), | i i \ | 20 Stefanos Alexopoulos turgical scholarship of the last ten years is meant (1) to be a tool for liturgical scholars world-wide, (2) to make wider known the important work that is being done in the field of liturgical studies in Greece to- day, (3) to engage Greek liturgical scholars and their work in the dia- logue taking place within the international scholarly liturgical com- ‘munity. My long-term goal and vision is ultimately to produce a com- plete electronic full-text database of Greek liturgical scholarship. Because of lack of space, I limit my presentation to monographs and collections of liturgical articles (either by individual authors ot as acta of liturgical conferences). T do not include articles published in various periodicals, new editions of liturgical books, unpublished doctoral or master’s theses, or electronic publications. In addition, I do not include publications in related fields (Hymnography, Hagiology, Musicology, Art, Architecture, Homiletics etc.) or new editions of pri- mary sources of liturgical interest. Ultimately, all these will be includ ed in a future publication. In presenting the material, I first give the author's name in Greek, then transliterate it in English, and provide the title in Greck with an English translation, | also provide the ISBN, when available. 1, Monographs Gequdc, Baoiiei0g (Thermos, Basileios]. The First Liturgical Conference of the Society for Orthodox Studies. This liturgical conference was, in a sense, the “response” to the li- turgical conferences of the Special Synodical Committee of Liturgical Renewal of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece (and to a lesser extent to the liturgical conference organized by the Greek theological periodical Suvagic in 199°) representing a group of theologians in the Greek Orthodox Church who are against liturgical renewal. Some of them even call it a heresy.” The acta of the conference were pub- lished in the theological periodical @codgouia which expresses the views of this group. Although not all the articles in the acta of this conference are of scholarly value, I deem it necessary to include them in this presentation as scholars have to be aware of the argumentation of both sides. It is my conviction that if any discussion on liturgical renewal is to be successful, the voice and the arguments of those 9p- posed must be heard, and given the proper attention and response. «Td Meyaheio tis elas Aatgetas.
