Printed in the United States of America 1 NDT TRAINING PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE UQUID PENETRANT METHOD. INTRODUCTION TO THE LIQUID PENETRANT TRAINING PACKAGE ‘The training materials in this package are designed to provide a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of liquid penetrant testing. The training program should contain the following classroom hours to adequately resent the information suggested in the ASNT publication SNT-TC-1A Recommended Practice, June 1975 Edition. ‘Level | training wil include lectures on all six lessons with an average of approximately one hour per Jesson. Emphasis by the instructor should be given to lessons 1-4 which cover the basic types and applications of penetrants. Level Il training will include lectures on all six lessons with an average of approximately two hours per lesson. Emphasis by the instructor should be given to lessons 5-7 which cover inspection and Giscontinuity evaluation. 4 the training program is simed at meeting the guidelines for Level |, the instructor can follow the lecture ‘guide closely with very litte elaboration or explanation. If the Level Il guidelines are to be met. the instruc- tor should encourage additional outside reading and class discussions and should present personal infor- ‘mation to elaborate on the lecture guide outine. Each program can be easily expanded and is limited only by the instructor's experience and expertise. ‘The materials in this course are formatted for use in a typical classroom training situation with an ideal class size of 5-25 students. The instructor will lecture on all lessons with the sid of the lecture guide transparencies provided. CONTENTS OF TRAINING PACKAGES {tis not a requirement that the instructor selected to teach the course be a professional educator or an ex: ert in the liquid penetrant method. However, the instructor should be familiar with al materials before at- tempting to teach the course. This course is designed to provide a maximum amount of leaming with a ‘minimum amount of preparation by the instructor. The following breakdown of the materials end their func- tions should be carefully studied, 1. STUDENT PACKAGE—Each package wil contain the following: A. Student's Guide which will describe the course and provide a lesson outline, B. 1 Classroom Training Handbook which will serve as the major text for the training course (CT-6-2) ©. 7 Individual lecture guide packets which provide an outline of the fundamentals of the quid enetrant instruction, ©. 1 packet of quizzes. A quiz will be furnished for each of the 7 lessons in the training course. 2. INSTRUCTOR'S PACKAGE—Each package will contain the following A. Instructor's Gulde which will provide instructions to the instructor in preparing for and administer- ing this course. instructor's Guide B. 1 Classroom Training Handbook which wil be used by the instructor as the main resource text (cT-6-2) C. 7 Individual lecture guide packets which wil be identical to those received by the student. D. 7 Individual lecture guide transparency packets which will be used by the instructor as basis for the lectures (see par ii of this guide). E. 1 packet of quiz keys which wil provide the questions and answers for all exams in the 7 lessons. F. 1 special pen tor marking on the transparencies. G. Sample certificates avaiable from ASNT Headquarters at 10¢ each for the 6” by 9” and 15¢ ‘each for the 814" by 11” certificate. (optional) 1 set of liquid penetrant filmstrips which wil be extremely useful to the instructor in Providing continuity and professionalism to the presentation, 1. (optional) 1. programmed Instruction handbook Pht. This may be useful to the Instructor as review for PT-Lesson 6 because some of the material in the lecture quide is from this source. ‘J. (optional) programmed Instruction handbook PH#-2, This may be useful to the instructor as a review for PT-Lessons 1-5 because some of the material in the lecture guide is from this source. K. (optional) Principles of Penetrants by C. E. Betz. L. (optional) SNT-TC-1A Recommended Practice, June 1975 Edition. |, SUGGESTED USE OF INSTRUCTOR LECTURE GUIDE TRANSPARENCIES. 1. The transparencies can be used on any standard overhead projector. 2. The information on the transparency is identical to the student lecture guide contained in the student packet. The “Lecture Guide Transparencies” are intended to serve as memory joggers for the in- structor and should not be used as a strict outline or script. ‘A. The instructor should cover the overhead projector with a sheet of heavy paper and lower it under the transparency after each item is discussed. A special pen is enciosed for use as a pointer and {or wrting on the transparent sheet. 'B. The instructor should elaborate and relate personal information whenever it is pertinent. C. Prior to the lecture the instructor may wish to record some additional information on the lecture ‘guides. This could either be done directty on the transparencies or on the instructor's set of lec ture guides. D. Students should be encouraged to folow along in their set of lecture guides and write in additional information when it is given. Discussions and questions should be encouraged as the instructor proceeds through the lessons. IV, SUGGESTED USE OF CLASSROOM TRAINING HANDBOOK 1. The Classroom Training Handbook is the major source of information for this liquid penetrant training course. Additional information from the programmed instruction handbook is sometimes added to the lecture notes, and the instructor may wish to review this source. 2. Reading assignments should be given to the students to correlate with the instructor's lectures. The Classroom Training Handbook CT-6-2 follows the lessons in this training course in the folowing order. Juno 1993, 2 Instuctor's Guise PT-Lesson 3—Classroom Training Handbook Ch 4 (optional) Pl-4-2 Penetrant Ch 388 PT-Lesson 4—Classroom Training Handbook Ch 4 optional) Pl-4-2 Penetrant Ch 4:5 PT-Lesson 5—Classroom Training Handbook Ch 5-6 (optional) Pl-4-2 Penetrant Ch 6-7 PT-Lesson 6—Classroom Training Handbook Ch 5 (optional) PI-4-1 Introduction Ch 1-7 PT-Lesson 7—Classroom Training Handbook Ch 7 {optional) SNT-TC:4, pp. 1-10 \V. SUGGESTED USE OF QUIZ AND KEYS 1. Its suggested that the quiz packet be removed betore the student is issued his/her package of train- ing materials. 2. Quizzes can be given at the end of the lecture or at the beginning of the next lecture period, The number of quizzes glven at one time wil depend on the number of lessons covered. Quizzes can be corrected in class and should be oiscussed briefly with the students. Don’ fal into deep arguments about interpretation of questions and so on, 3. The quiz questions in this package are not intended for use in total certification of NDT personnel. “They are simply teaching tools to aid the instructor in presenting the material. f examinations for cer- ‘ication are needed. it is suggested that the instructor obtan a copy of SNT-TC-14 and follow this recommended practice (par. 8 SNT-TC-14). ‘4. If the instructor so chooses, the quiz resufts could be used to arrive at a percentage score that could ‘be recorded on the student's certificate of completion along with the number of course hours endfor CEU creats. VI SUGGESTED USE OF LIQUID PENETRANT FILMSTRIP (optional) 1, The fimstrips protessionaly produced and will add depth and clarity to the instructor's presentation. 2. Part 1 of the fimstnip should be shown pnor to the lecture on lessons 1-4 of this training course: 3. Part 2 of the fimstrip should be shown prof to the lecture on lessons 5-7 of this training course, The fimstrip will serve as a process review and discuss typical indications, 4. Ht the lectures have taken place over an extended period of time, the instructor may wish to show the entire fimstrip again at the end of the course for review and continuty. Vil. SUGGESTED USE OF PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION HANDBOOKS (optiona/) 4. The instructor may wish to read Pl-4-1 and Pl-a:2 as a personal review of the liquid penetrant fun- damentals, 2. Some information inthe lecture guides was taken from the programmed instruction handbooks. 3. As some students may learn more effectively from the programmed instruction approach. the instruc: tor may wish to also assign reading from Pi-4-1 and PI-4-2. 4. The programmed instruction handbooks contain many questons and answers that may be of use to the instructor.
