Chapter 4: The Life of Jose Rizal

Name: Masaranga, Armila S. Prof.: Carol R. Antonio
Course: BSEd Sciences Date: 10/13/21

Activity 1
Briefly answer the following:
1. Describe the background of Rizal’s ancestry that might have contributed to his life and
education.
The Rizal family is one of the wealthiest families during their time. They were
considered privileged, well-educated, and influential. Rizal’s ancestors have been famous
since the beginning of his life. It is very common for them to attend a prestigious school in
Biñan and excel in Latin and Spanish, especially Jose Rizal, who was recognized for his
great potential at a young age. The Mercado-Rizal family had traces of Japanese, Spanish,
Malay, and even Negrito blood aside from Chinese. Rizal's father, Francisco Mercado, was a
wealthy farmer who leased lands from the Dominican friars. Francisco's earliest ancestors
were Siang-co and Zun-nio, who later gave birth to Lam-co. Lam-co married Ines de la Rosa
of a known entrepreneurial family in Binondo. Francisco Mercado became one of the richest
in Biñan and owned a herd of carabaos. He was also active in local politics and was elected
capitan del pueblo. Francisco married Teodora Alonso who belonged to one of the wealthiest
families in Manila. Because of Francisco and Teodora's industry and hardwork, their family
became prominent member of the principalia class in the town of Calamba. Being in a
privileged family, Rizal had a good education. Rizal’s life was influenced by his loving and
caring large family, as well as his passion for nature, as shown by the beautiful view that
surrounds their home, and his understanding of religions which was taught to him by his
mother.

2. Compare the experiences of Rizal as a student in Ateneo Municipal, UST, and in Madrid.
Rizal, who has been a genius since he was a kid, already demonstrated intelligence,
learned easily and has always been willing to learn new things. Rizal was sent by his father to
Ateneo. It is his first university where he was pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree to express
his passion in arts and letters. At the start, he lagged behind his classmates but because of his

perseverance, dedication and seriousness in studies, he became the Emperor for being the
most outstanding student in class, in just a month's time. Rizal studied at Ateneo where he
consistently showed excellence in his academic performance. He passed the oral examination
and graduated with a degree Bachelor of Arts with the highest honors.
After finishing Bachelor of Arts in Ateneo, Rizal was sent by Don Francisco to the
University of Santo Tomas (UST). Despite what had happened to GOMBURZA, he still
pursued university education and enrolled in UST. During his freshman year, he attended the
course of Philosophy and Letters. Also in the same year, he took up a vocational course in
Ateneo that gave him the title expert surveyor. In his second year at UST, Rizal shifted his
course to Medicine after discovering about his mother's failing eyesight. Rizal's academic
performance in UST was not as impressive as that in Ateneo. He was good student in
Medicine but not as gifted as he was in Arts and Letters. Despite this, he was still one of the
seven students who remained in the course in his last year at UST out of the original batch of
twenty four.
Rizal decided to move to Madrid where he enrolled in Medicine and Philosophy and
Letters at the Universidad Central de Madrid. He also took lessons in painting and sculpture
at the Academia de San Fernando, and studied French, English and German at the Madrid
Ateneo. He also managed to enroll in fencing class at the schools if Sanz and Carbonell.
Rizal was awarded with the degree and title of Licentiate in Medicine for passing the medical
examination. With this title, he was able to practice medicine. He continued enrolling in
courses that would have led to a Doctorate in Medicine but the degree was not given to him
because he failed to pay the fee required to defend his thesis. However, he obtained the
degree Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad Central de Madrid with a
rating of sobresaliente or outstanding.

3. Who were the important persons that influenced Rizal in his intellectual pursuits?
Paciano, Rizal’s brother was a significant influence on his intellectual pursuits. He
mentored Rizal throughout his life. He became the second father of Rizal. He highly
respected him and valued all his advice. It was also him who accompanied Rizal when he

first went to school in Biñan and convinced him to pursue his studies in Europe. But Leon
Monroy was someone who really educated him and sharpened his skills in Basic Latin,
reading and writing. Rizal’s mother, Doña Teodora Alonso was the most influential person in
his academic pursuits among all the people who had been with him. Through her guidance,
Rizal developed his passion for all types of art and the beautiful nature that surrounded them.
As she drew his attention to the world around him.

4. What were Rizal’s activities in Dapitan and their impact?

For 3 years following Rizal’s detention, Dapitan was his den. He practiced medicine,
pursued scientific studies and continued his artistic pursuits in sculpture, painting, sketching
and writing poetry. During his stay, he established a school for boys and promoted
community development projects including the installation of lampposts in every corner and
a water system to supply the town with water for drinking and irrigation. He also found time
to study the Malayan Language and other Philippine languages. He engaged himself in
farming and commerce and even invented a wooden machine for making bricks. Rizal’s
activities in Dapitan made him more active in his field, allowing him to support more people,
beautify and improve Dapitan’s situation. He made a big relief map of Mindanao in the plaza
and used it to teach geography. With this map which still exists today, he discussed to the
town people the position of Dapitan in relation to other places of Mindanao.

5. How would you assess Rizal’s objection to the revolution?

Rizal’s opposition to the revolution was clearly to do the right thing, resulting in
negotiation rather than a war between the Spaniards and Filipinos. He objected to it because
he knows the importance of a well-planned movement with sufficient arms. As to what Rizal
intends to really do first is to educate his countrymen, so that they can learn, aware and
understand what is going on. He wants the Filipinos to come together and redeem the land in
a peaceful and orderly ways. His best weapons were his knowledge and skills, not the
sharpest blades and weapons.
