There are two main types of lighting– natural light and artificial
light.

NATURAL LIGHT
Sunlight is the most natural light source there is. It’s mentally stimulating and
absolutely free. But it’s also difficult to control.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
Artificial lighting should be used to add layers to your space. A warm light (opposed
to a clear light) is the most welcoming option for residential spaces. As well as
adding to the overall interior design style of a space, artificial lighting can be used
to highlight features, create zones and alter the perceived proportions of a room.  

TYPES OF INTERIOR LIGHT

The five main types of interior lighting are: general, ambient, mood, task and accent.

GENERAL LIGHTING
General lighting is the basic foundation of a lighting scheme, providing a uniform
glow over an entire room and illuminating a space functionally rather than for
aesthetic reasons.

The defining characteristic of general lighting is that it’s usually direct and should
be controlled by a dimmer switch to account for changes in daylight.

AMBIENT LIGHTING (MOOD LIGHTING)

The next layer of lighting is ambient lighting which is a great partner to general
lighting. Both types share important characteristics – they’re primarily functional
and used to light a complete area. The main difference between the two is in the
direction of their light.

Types of fixtures that can provide general ambient indoor lighting:

 Chandelier
 Ceiling mounted fixture
 Wall-mounted fixture
 Traditional recessed fixtures and / or LED downlights
 Track light
 Floor lamp
 Table lamp

CHANDELIER
Chandelier light fixtures also work well for dining room lighting, creating ambiance and setting the
desired mood whether romantic or casual.

CEILING MOUNTED FIXTURE
Surface and ceiling mounted ultraviolet UVC fixtures are generally designed to be used in
unoccupied spaces for overall air and surface sterilization. These fixtures use either high or lower
powered UVC bulbs, depending on whether the fixture will be used at a closer or further distance
from the surface they are intended to sanitize.

TRADITIONAL RECESSED FIXTURES AND /

Recessed fixtures are comprised of three main components, housing, trim, and bulb. Housing is
the bulk of the fixture which is hidden within the wall or ceiling and contains the electrical
connections of the fixture. Trim is the decorative, visible portion of the fixture and may include
baffles, reflectors or shades.

TRACK LIGHT
Track lighting is a method of lighting where light fixtures are attached anywhere on a
continuous track device which contains electrical conductors.

“General lighting is just that – practical light for every day and
night use. Ambience lighting will more times out of none be
connected to a dimming system to control the light levels depending
on the occasion. Ambience lighting is generally used for
entertaining – it creates drama.”

TASK LIGHTING
As its name would suggest task lighting is any light source used for a particular task
like reading or cooking. By nature, these lights need to have a stronger wattage than
most other lighting. Always combine with adequate ambient light, however, to avoid
eye strain caused by the sharp contrast from light to dark areas.

ACCENT LIGHTING
 Similar to task lighting, accent lighting has a particular function and is any
lighting which has specifically been included to highlight a particular feature
in a room.

TYPES OF FIXTURES THAT PROVIDE ACCENT LIGHTING:

 Track light

 Tape and extrusion
 Directional recessed fixture or downlight
 Wall-mounted fixtures

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CEILING
LIGHTS
CEILING LIGHTS MOUNTED ON THE
CEILING
A ceiling light mounted to the ceiling or close to the ceiling is ideal for medium or large rooms
or low ceilings. These fixtures are your best options if you need ambient light for an entire
room.

FLUSH LIGHTS
Flush light fixture are flat attachments mounted on your ceiling. This is a very versatile style,
and you can easily find fixtures between 12 and 24” wide in function of the size of the room.

SEMI-FLUSH LIGHTS
This is another popular and versatile type of ceiling light fixture. Semi-flush lights typically
hang 4 to 8” below the ceiling and look best if you have a ceiling between 8 and 10 feet high.

RECESSED LIGHTS
Some retailers call recessed lights pot or can lights. This type of light fixture is mounted inside
of the ceiling and is probably your best choice if you have a room with a low ceiling.

UTILITY LIGHTING
Utility light are either very simple fixtures mounted flush to the ceiling or casings for LED
bulbs. This second option would be ideal for your garage workshop since you will need
something brighter and more energy-efficient.

LED INDIRECT LIGHTING

LED indirect lighting is an original take on ceiling lights. Instead of mounting a light fixture on
your ceiling, this method consists in installed strips of LED lights around your ceiling.

HANGING CEILING LIGHTS
Hanging light fixtures are more adapted for task and ambient lighting. This type of fixture
concentrates lights to a small area and can easily become one of the main points of focus when
you design a room.

PENDANT LIGHTS
Pendant lights are somewhat similar to since they hang low. However, pendant lights provide
you with only one source of light.

INVERTED PENDANT LIGHTS
Inverted pendant lights instantly create a subdued atmosphere for any room. A lot of
homeowners use  for their kitchen island, but this style can do wonders in a bedroom or even in
a living room.

CHANDELIERS
A  chandelier definitely going to add some pizazz to your living room or dining room! Because
this type of light fixture will instantly become the central point of focus of the room, you need
to choose the style of your chandelier very carefully. It is also important to properly adjust the
height of this type of ceiling light.

TRACK AND RAIL LIGHTING
Track light fixtures create a very modern effect. These fixtures are ideal for accent or task
lighting since several individual lights hang from a track.

COVE LIGHTING
Cove lighting is a form of indirect lighting built into ledges, recesses, or valances in a ceiling or high on the
walls of a room. It directs light up towards the ceiling and down adjacent walls. It may be used as primary
lighting, or for aesthetic accent, especially to highlight decorative ceilings.

This second option would be more adapted if you want to upgrade a
room without replacing an existing ceiling light or if you have a
specific light fixture in mind.
