ScienceGrade12Applied Subject LAS Research II Q1Week4 8

This document provides guidance on writing research titles and the background or introduction section of a research study. It discusses the guidelines for each, including making the main topic and research question evident in the title and introduction. Sample research titles and an excerpt of a background section are analyzed against these guidelines. Students are then asked to practice writing their own research titles following the guidelines and to draft the beginning of an introduction for a hypothetical bullying research study.

Activity No. 7
Analyzing Background of the Study

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Describe the background of the study

2. Write background of the study

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

Writing an introduction or the background of the study is not an easy task especially
for a beginner researcher. You have certainly encountered some issues about writing an
introduction not only in research but also in other learning areas. In this lesson, you will write
your own background of the study following its guidelines.

IV. PROCEDURE
1. Given below is an excerpt from the study entitled “Students Services in the Division
of Nueva Ecija,” read the given background of the study and answer the
questions below.
An excerpt from the study entitled “Students Services of the Secondary School in the Division of Nueva Ecija”
Researcher: Dr. Sheila Marie C. Magpayo
Introduction
Student services are the support given to students while staying at an institution. These are services that
can fill up the needs and concerns of the students. According to Moore (2000), services for learners should include
the following elements: pre-enrolment activities such as recruiting and orientation, admission and registration
support, academic advising, financial planning and management, access to library resources, personal and career
counselling, transcript services and technical support.
Although student services are given that focus in Higher Education and in the secondary schools in the
Division of Nueva Ecija, yet there are services that found wanting in facilities, tools and equipment, as well as
qualified personnel to handle specific services. While conceptualizing this study, the researcher made a preliminary
survey and conducted informal interviews with teachers handling specific student services. She got the inkling that
indeed secondary schools’ student services needed to be improved. It is therefore the intention of this study to
assess the services that are available to students in the four Congressional Districts of Nueva Ecija so that they 4
could be better contributors to the latter’s learning experiences and educational achievement.
2. Complete the table below and find out if the above sample followed the rules on
writing background of the study.
NO. QUESTIONS YES NO EVIDENCE
Ex. Is the main topic evident? The introduction talks about student
services which I consider as the main
research topic
1 Does the introduction follow the
format of general to specific
content?
2 Does it answer the question “what
am I studying?”
3 Does it discuss the importance of
the research?
4 Does it tell facts about the research
topic?
5 Can the reader understand the
study?

V. ANALYSIS

Q1. How is the background/introduction of the sample study written?

_________________________________________________________________________________
Q2. Generally speaking, did the sample background of the study follow the
guidelines?
______________________________________________________________________________

VI. GENERALIZATION

How will you describe a good background of the study/introduction?

VII. APPLICATION

If you are going to do a research about bullying, how will you start your
background of the study/introduction?

VIII. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY

This is now the time where you are going to write your background of the study
based on your approved research topic. Be sure to follow the guide questions below in
writing an introduction.
1. What am I studying?
2. Why is it important to study?
3. What do I know already about it?
4. What basis do I need to provide (such that the reader can understand my study)?

Stating Research Questions

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Identify the two types of research questions

2. State research questions based on the approved topic

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

There are different questions that you may be thinking about a person, thing and
even an event. As an individual, you want a definite answer to your questions. This is also
true about research, a researcher needs an answer to the problem he is investigating, and
this is the focus of this lesson: how to state research questions. The research questions must
have the following characteristics: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reliable and Time-
bound.

An Exploration of Effects of Bullying Victimization From a Complete Mental Health Perspective
Aileen Fullchange, Michael J. Furlong
First Published January 5, 2016 http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2158244015623593
Abstract
This study explored the effects of being bullied from a dual-factor lens, specifically examining
the relation between victimization and constructs that contribute to social-emotional well-
being. Prior to carrying out the main analyses, the factor structure of self-report items related
to experiencing bullying and harassment from the California Healthy Kids Survey, which was
administered to more than 14,000 high school students, was examined to establish that these
3. Write your answer below.
items represent an overall factor: students’ experience of victimization. This factor was then
used as an independent variable in a series of planned comparisons with a dependent
variable represented by constructs addressed by the Social Emotional Health Survey–
Secondary: belief-in-self, emotional competence, belief-in-others, and engaged living. With
increased frequency of victimization, suicidality increased and belief-in-others decreased. For
other constructs, belief-in-self, engaged living, and depression, there were significant
differences found between individuals who had experienced frequencies of bullying as low as
less than once a month and those who did not experience bullying at all but no further
detrimental impacts were seen with even higher frequencies of victimization, indicating that
being victimized at all is significantly worse than not being victimized for these variables.
Implications and future directions for research are explored.
