Water Management Technologies Concept Note
Water Management Technologies Concept Note
CONCEPT NOTE
Grow Drip Irrigation is the only locally registered organization that has extensive experience for farmers’ capacity
building and agricultural technical skills training focusing on irrigation and water management technologies and
techniques in Puntland state regions of Somalia since 2020.
GDI is head quartered in Garowe, the capital city of Puntland state of Somalia. Meanwhile, we have experienced
technical team in the fields of agricultural extension, rural development and food security and other cross-cutting
areas.
The organization has successfully implemented a relevant project in Nugal region (Installed drip irrigation to 17
hectors in Cuun, Shimbiraaley and –Balley villages) benefited by the IDPs and other farmers and community living
in the above districts funded by SRCS and NCA. Thereby, we are dedicated and privileged in achieving result
oriented outcomes to every interventions in hand and meeting stakeholders’ needs.
Among increasingly scarce resources, water is becoming a constraining factor in agricultural production and
in sustaining life in urban and rural areas. Food security is inextricable linked to water security and can only

be achieved through a concerted action to raise water productivity, maximizing crop production in both
rain fed and irrigated farms. The advances from more effective water management are considerable. A range
of techniques and technologies are available that will ensure a more effective use of water for agricultural
production, both in rainfall and in irrigated farms. Investments are required, but more importantly: advise,
technical guidance and financial support to the users to make sure that the initial constraints linked to the
introduction and management of new water management techniques and technologies are adequately
addressed.
Although irrigation is crucial in increasing world’s food production, many governments have found it
increasing difficult to finance the cost of irrigation operation and management. This has led to rapid
deterioration of infrastructure, poor ma na g e me nt and subsequent wastage of water and advancing
waterlogging and salinity. Poor system performance and the governments' inability to do something about
it have spurted the efforts to increase farmers' participation in irrigation. However this does not motivate
farmers to participate. Their participation must result in direct benefits.
Putting farmers in charge of Irrigation Management Systems along the technologies and techniques has proved
effective to achieve efficient and sustainable water management systems and to increase water productivity.
This is evident in the transfer of management of irrigation systems to the immediate beneficiaries.
Explanation
Farmers’ Water Management Technologies and Techniques is the process in which individual farmers and
farmer institutions set objectives for the management of their water resources; establish appropriate conditions,
and identify, mobilize and use resources, so as to attain these objectives.
This description of Farmers’ Water Management Technologies and Techniques applies to all types of water-
control systems, including irrigation, drainage and flood control systems and associated activities that resort
under the responsibility of farmers, either as individuals or cooperating.
Thereby, we are dedicated and privileged in achieving result oriented outcomes to every interventions in
hand and meeting stakeholders’ needs

Methodology and approach
We are going to implement and use Participatory Training and Extension approach developed by FAO-AGLW
which is a training and extension approach that is based on a participatory analysis of the constraints and
opportunities and based on the outcome of this analysis the introduction of new and appropriate technologies.
Group based extension and training activities that enhance farmers’ capacities and skills, as well as capacity
building of the staff involved in the extension activities go hand in hand.
Participatory Training and Extension is a tool to reach the goal of improved Farmers’ Water Management
technologies and techniques involving and supporting farmers. In order to support farmers and increase their
capacity in Farmers Water Management technologies and techniques they need training and support for the
introduction of technologies including drip irrigation kits and greenhouses.
The main objective of this capacity building is to empower farmers in Bari and Nugaal regions of Puntland
in order to develop, modify and diffuse appropriate and sustainable new technologies.
Grow Drip Irrigation Organization will assign a technical team to monitor the effectiveness and efficiency of the
operations in order to make sure that the project is following strictly under the guidelines and objectives set for
the project. This project will be implemented by the GDIO who have been carrying out such operations since the
last 2 years. This operation will be carried out a team consist of 4 technical staff

cultivation, planting and harvesting
techniques; improve crop yield, quality of
seed and nutritional values of crops; and solve
problems of food security.
In aligning with financial policy of the Grow Drip Irrigation Organization, the resource would be
mobilized in the following ways in order to successfully done this project. We are promised 30% to
be covered by the one of our partners and looking to fundraise for about 70% from the International
INGOs, donors and government institutions interesting to take part such these crucial interventions
and other goodwill people who are concerning about the agricultural interventions for their
community.

Expectations
Grow Drip Irrigation Organization is expecting and confident that their proposed concept
note will be impactful for the smallholders farmers living in Bari and Nugaal region-Puntland,
Somalia.
GDIO is looking forward to support the smallholders in our community and also to meet the
expectations of the funding donors for this project. Meanwhile, Setting up best and
reasonable initiative that will improve outcome mechanisms and facilitate the reporting and
follow-up for the beneficiaries.
This proposed idea is expecting to be implemented with a total budget of 70,000 USD,
thereby, We are requesting to have a fund with this project of a total amount of 17,500 USD
while, one of our partners promised is hereby guaranteeing to make a contribution of 7,500
USD to contribute in-kind contribution including greenhouses, drip irrigation tools and seeds.
Other
We hereby declaring that most of the agricultural farmers in Nugal and Bari region are lacking
the knowledge of how to use modern agricultural technologies and techniques for water
management and also needful for this project thereby, we are assuring that our initiative is
absolutely the right system to make use of for this intervention with a good sound result.
