STEM PowerPoint

This document discusses STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. It notes that the US lags behind other countries in terms of STEM degrees awarded and student performance in math and science. STEM jobs are projected to be in high demand and integral to future economic growth. Effective STEM instruction engages students through hands-on experiences and integrates subjects. Schools need standards, well-trained teachers, support systems, and equal access to provide high-quality STEM learning. Next steps include collaborating with partners, ongoing teacher training, and working toward STEM certification.

What is STEM?
The acronym STEM stands for science,
technology, engineering, and math.
However, there is some disagreement with
regard to precisely which degrees and
occupations fall into the category of STEM.
In general, we consider STEM to include life
sciences, physical sciences, mathematics
and statistics, computing, and engineering.
STEM Education
offers a chance for students
to make sense of the world
rather than learn isolated
bits and pieces of
phenomena.
WHY DO WE NEED STEM?
Successful K-12 STEM is essential for scientific
discovery and economic growth.

Too many students leave school unprepared:

75% of 8th graders are not proficient in mathematics.
10% of 8th graders meet international benchmarks in
science.
Gaps among students from different race/ethnic and
economic backgrounds are wide.

The most recent ten-year employment
projections by the U.S. Labor
Department show that of the twenty
fastest growing occupations for 2015,
fifteen of them require significant

What does effective STEM
instruction look like:
 Capitalizes on students’ early interest and
experiences, identifies and builds on what they know,
and provides them with experiences to engage them
in the practices of science and sustain their interest.
 Success occurs through student research
experiences.
 Promotes engagement and lifts test scores.
 Integrates Mathematics and Science instruction and
occupational education.
What does the school need for
effective STEM instruction:
 A coherent set of standards and curriculum.
 Teachers with high capacity to teach in their
discipline.
 A supportive system of assessment and
accountability.
 A student-centered learning climate.
 Adequate instructional time.
 Equal access to high-quality stem learning
opportunities.
What does the school need for
effective STEM instruction:
 Principals who are inclusive of others in the
leadership work , and are willing to act as drivers for
change.
 Parent-community ties that involve active outreach to
make school a welcoming place for parents, engage
them in supporting their children’s academic success,
and strengthen connections to other local institutions.

The future for our students:
 75 % of all jobs will be in STEM related fields.

 All jobs will require components of STEM.

 Business and industry want employees with

these skills!
What are our next steps:
 Collaborate with community partners.
 Provide ongoing professional learning for teachers.
 Create lessons that use the students’ accumulated
knowledge and require collaboration with a team to
design a sequence of steps, events, or processes
that lead to the successful completion of the project.
 Work toward teacher certification in STEM
(Elementary – 75% of teachers have a Math or
Science Endorsement or pass the Middle Grades
GACE; Middle/High – 100% of teachers certified in
his/her area, Math, Science or CTAE).
