Activity 1: Identifying Primary and Secondary Sources

Directions: Determine whether the following are primary or secondary sources. Circle

the letter indicating whether the item is a "P" primary source or "S" secondary source.

For each one, explain your reasoning in complete sentence.

1. The story of your grandfather tells you about his experience during the World War
II.

P S - PRIMARY Why: Because the source of the information is from the person who is
experienced the event itself.

2. A letter written by Alberto Dela Cruz to his mother about the latest developments in

the Revolutionary War.


P S - PRIMARY Why: Because the letter is a first hand written from the author, it also records
the specific events and communication directly from the writer to his mother.

3. The Diary of Anne Frank - the published diary of a teenage girl who experiences the

Holocaust first hand.

P S - PRIMARY Why: Because Diaries is an original material, it is a kind of personal text, the
information inside the diary is personally origination to the person who wrote it.

4. Your Sociology textbook or an encyclopedia.

P S - SECONDARY Why: Because most of the information from sociology textbook or an


encyclopedia are from different references or sources put together to make a literature without direct
physical connection to the person or event being studied.
5. Your high school diplomas.
P S - PRIMARY Why: Because diploma is the only original document which certified you as a
graduated students or already accomplished college academic.

6. A photograph of you and your friends at your 8th birthday party.

P S - PRIMARY Why: Because it is taken from the time of main event. It presents the visual
record of a moment in time.

7. The information from the museum tour guide who shows you around the exhibit and shares facts
with you.

P S - SECONDARY Why: Because the tour guide share information gathered from different or
other sources it’s because he/she was not the person who is personally knew or created the artifacts
inside the museum.

8. A mummy from Cordillera.

P S - PRIMARY Why: Because artifacts provide a concrete, tangible dimension evidences as it


created and direct links as a time or event is occurring.
