Lecture 1 - Introduction (Conic Sections)
Conic
Sections?
❑Conic sections are obtained by the
intersection of the surface of a cone
with a plane, and have certain
features.
❑The knowledge of
conic sections can
be traced back to
Ancient Greece.
❑The conic sections have been
studies by the ancients Greek
mathematicians with this work
culminating around 200 BC.
❑Appollonius of Perga, a Greek
geometer and astronomer,
undertook a systematic study of
their properties and became known
for his theories on the topic of
conic sections.
❑His definitions of the terms
ellipse, parabola and hyperbola are
https://www.daviddarling.info/encyclop
the ones in use today.
edia/A/Apollonius.html
❑It was not until the sixteenth century, in
part as a consequence of the invention of
printing and the resulting dissemination
of Apollonius' work, that any significant
progress in the theory or applications of
conic sections occurred; but when it did
occur, in the work of Kepler, it was as part
of one of the major advances in the
history of science.
We see conics
every day.
They appear everywhere
in the world and can be
man-made or natural.
Conics are found in architecture,
physics, astronomy and navigation.

Like the parabola and ellipse,
the hyperbola also has
reflecting properties.
The hyperbola can also be
applied in some structures to
help in design. The hyperbola
has a few properties that allow
it to play its part in the real
world..

❑A conic section (or simply
conic) is a curve obtained as
the intersection of the surface
of a cone with a plane. The
three types of conic sections
are the hyperbola, the parabola,
and the ellipse. The circle is
type of ellipse, and is
sometimes considered to be a
fourth type of conic section.

ELLIPSE
❑If the plane
intersects one nappe
at an angle to the axis
(other than 90∘), then
the conic section is an

ELLIPSE
❑If the cutting plane is not
parallel to a plane tangent to
the cone.
❑Tangent planes to a surface
are planes that just touch the
surface at the point and are
“parallel” to the surface at the
point.

is parallel to a plane

HYPERBOLA
❑A plane curve generated by a
point so moving that the
difference of the distances from
two fixed points is a constant.
❑A curve formed by the
intersection of a double right
circular cone with a plane that
cuts both halves of the cone
