JMU Wireless Network

Configuration for
Windows 7

Some screenshots in this guide were created with the

Windows 7 Release Candidate.

Connecting for the first time

By clicking once on the Wireless
Network Connection icon on the
right of the Task Bar, Windows will
display available wireless networks
and the network you are connected
to, if any.

To begin configuring your Windows 7

computer for the wireless network,
click JMU-Official-Wireless. JMU-
Official-Wireless will become
highlighted when it is selected.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
After selecting JMU-Official-Wireless, click the Connect button that will appear
in wireless network list.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
Windows will now display Connecting to JMU-Official-Wireless... while it
detects the security settings for the wireless network.

You will then be prompted to accept the certificate for the authentication serverʼs
certificate to initiate encryption. This encryption keeps your e-ID and password
safe. Since this the first time Windows has encountered this certificate, it will
display the warning below.

To verify the certificate information, click the triangle button next to Details.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
The Windows Security Alert window will then expand to show information about
the certificate. The certificate will be for radius.jmu.edu, issued by Thawte
Premium Server CA.

Click Connect to continue.

Enter your e-ID and password, then click OK. If your computer is joined to
Active Directory you may not receive this prompt.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
Windows may display Connecting to JMU-Official-Wireless... again while it
connects to the network.

It may take several seconds for your computer to acquire an IP address, during
which time Windows may change the Wireless Network Connection icon to
look like the one below on the right.

After successfully connecting to the wireless network and getting an IP address,

Windows will change the Wireless Network Connection icon to look like the
one below on the right, with the solid white bars indicating how strong the
wireless signal is. This may vary depending on your location.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
To verify that you are connected to the wireless network, click once on the
Wireless Network Connection icon and JMU-Official-Wireless will show as
Connected in the list of wireless networks.

Active Directory & Automatic Login

If your computer is joined to Active Directory, it can be configured to

automatically sign in to the wireless network using the credentials you used to log
in to your computer. Windows 7 can also save your wireless network login
credentials even if your computer is not joined to Active Directory, but this is
not recommended.

To begin configuring your computer to do this or change your existing settings,

click once on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the right of the Task
Bar to display the list of available wireless networks.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
Right-click on JMU-Official-Wireless and select Properties from the menu that
appears.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
This will display the Wireless Network Properties window. The Security tab
should be selected automatically but if the Connection tab is displayed, click the
Security tab at the top.

If you are not using Active Directory credentials to automatically connect to the
wireless network, Windows 7 will still save the password you used to connect the
first time. It is not recommended that users save this password and this function
can be disabled by unchecking the box next to Remember my credentials for
this connection each time Iʼm logged on. If you do not wish to change any
other settings, click OK.

To proceed to change the Active Directory logon settings, click the Settings
button next to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP).

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
From the resulting Protected EAP Properties window, click the Configure
button next to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
If your computer is NOT joined to Active Directory, uncheck the box next to
Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if
any), then click on OK.

If your computer IS joined to Active Directory and you want your computer to
automatically sign in to the wireless network, leave the box checked and click on
OK.

If you are not sure if your computer is joined to Active Directory, uncheck the box
and click on OK.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
This will return you to the Protected EAP Properties window. Click on OK.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
This will return you to the Wireless Network Properties window. Click on OK.

Your computer will now automatically log in to the wireless network using your
Active Directory credentials the next time you connect to the network.

are connected to, if any.

http://www.jmu.edu/computing/desktop/wireless/
Windows will now attempt to connect to the JMU-Official-Wireless network.

If your computer is not joined to Active Directory (or you left the
Automatically use my Windows logon name and password setting
unchecked), you will be asked to enter your logon credentials to connect to the
wireless network. Enter your e-ID and password, then click on OK.

If your computer is joined to Active Directory, Windows will use the domain
credentials you logged on with to join the JMU-Official-Wireless network.

Windows will present a progress display while it attempts to connect to the

wireless network.
