AT / ON / IN (TIME)

 We use in for longer periods (months, years, seasons): in October,


in 1968, in the past, in (the) future, in (the) winter, in the 1970s,etc.
We say: in the morning(s), in the afternoon(s), in the evening(s). We
also use in… to say how long it takes to do something: in a few
minutes, in six months, in four weeks, etc.

 We use at for the time of day: at 5 o’clock, at midnight, at


lunchtime, at sunset, etc. We use at in these expressions: at night, at
the weekend, at weekends, at Christmas, at Easter, at the moment, at
present, at the same time, etc.

Note: we usually ask “What time …?” (not usually “At what
time…?)

 We use on for days and dates: on Friday(s), on 12 March 1991, on


Christmas Day, on my birthday, etc. We say: on Friday morning(s),
on Sunday afternoon(s), on Monday evening(s), etc.

AT / ON / IN (PLACE)

When we are talking about the position of somebody or something:

 We use in for a volume: in a shop, in a factory, in a room, in a box,


in a house, in a cinema, in a car, in the air, etc. We also use in for an
area: in a town, in London, in a village, in the country, in a garden,
etc. We say: in a line, in a row, in a queue, in a picture, in a mirror,
in the sky, in the world, in a book, in a newspaper, in a magazine, in
bed, in hospital, in prison, in the corner of a room (rincón), in time
(con tiempo), etc.

Note also: in the south, in the north, in the west, in the east, etc.

The opposite is usually outside: outside a shop, outside the cinema,


etc.

 We use on for a surface or line: on a table, on the floor, on a wall,


on a roof, on a line, on the coast, on the ceiling, on the door, on her
nose, on a page, on a island, on the grass, on a chair, etc.. We also
use on for: on a bus, on a bike, on a train, etc. We say: on holiday,
on the left, on the right, on the first floor, on a map, on a list, on a
trial, on a trip, on the television, on the radio, on time (a la hora),
etc.

 We use at for other cases: at home, at school, at work, at the bus
stop, at the station, at the top of the page, at the bottom of the page,
at the end of the street, at college, at university, at factory, etc. We
say: at the back, at the front, at the corner of a street (esquina), etc.
