Speaking & Pronunciation 3A
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course provides guidance and extensive practice in effective listening and oral communication in a variety of
situations at a pre-intermediate level. The course emphasis is on practicing listening and speaking strategies that help
students express their ideas in sustained speaking contexts. Students have the opportunity to use vocabulary, syntax, and
new idiomatic expressions appropriate to the level for conversation while observing and practicing appropriate verbal and
nonverbal behavior.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO):
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
LISTENING COMPREHENSION
● understand straightforward factual information about common everyday or job-related topics, identifying both general
messages and specific details, provided speech is clearly articulated in a generally familiar accent.
● understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure
SPOKEN INTERACTION
● exchange, check and confirm information, deal with less routine situations, and explain why something is a problem.
● exploit a wide range of simple language to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling.
SPOKEN PRODUCTION
● reasonably fluently sustain a straightforward description of one of a variety of subjects within his/her field of interest,
presenting it as a linear sequence of points.
● express thoughts on more abstract, cultural topics such as movies, books, music, etc.
PRONUNCIATION
● approximate intonation and stress at both utterance and word levels, however, accent is usually influenced by other
languages he/she speaks.
PREREQUISITES: Score of level 3A on placement test
