Machine Dynamics with MATLAB

Learn the basics of machine dynamics and use them to model, simulate and analyze
the behavior of a car with the powerful tools provided by The MathWorks.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course will introduce you to a broad range of methodologies used in the field of
machine dynamics. You will learn how to model a vehicle using the fundamentals of
mechanics. You will get a deep understanding of the equations of motion and how to
solve them using the powerful tools of The MathWorks. Eventually, you will gain the
ability to analyze and interpret the computational results in order to optimize your design.
To get the most out of your time the course is subdivided into six weeks, each consists of
lectures, tutorials and exercises. During lectures, you will get all the theoretical
background of machine dynamics. Tutorials will teach you the basics of the used The
MathWorks products and exercises will merge your theoretical knowledge with the
practical use of the software into an exciting application.
You will learn how to model a vehicle by a one and a two degree of freedom system.
These systems could be base excited, force excited or not excited, they could be
damped or undamped and their mathematical representation could be solved
analytically, by state space representation or by solving the differential equation itself.
Therefore, if you ever wondered how to design a vehicle suspension using the powerful
tools of The MathWorks, I highly recommend you to attend to this course.

PREREQUISITES

INSTRUCTOR
Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Burkhard Corves is institute director of the Institute of
Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics since 2000. He is teaching
Machine Dynamics at RWTH Aachen University for 18 years and within his scientific
career, he published over 300 papers and was chair of different conferences such as the
EuCoMeS 2018 held in Aachen. During his industrial carrier, he developed and analyzed
several machines regarding their dynamic behavior.
Jan-Lukas Archut M.Sc. received his Master‘s degree with specialization on Automotive
Engineering at RWTH Aachen University in 2018. Afterwards he started his scientific
career at the Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics. His
research focus is on multibody dynamics and vibration analysis.
Martin Lankers M.Sc. received his Master‘s degree with specialization on Research and
Development at RWTH Aachen University in 2014. Afterwards he started his scientific
career at the Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics. In 2019
he finished his work there and switched to industry.

SCHEDULE AND DEADLINES

Over 6 weeks, you will learn the necessary steps to model, simulate and analyze the
dynamics of a car using The Mathworks products. Each week you will listen to Professor
Corves’ video lectures, which are concluded by a couple of recap questions. In addition,
you will get several tutorials about the functionalities of The Mathworks products. The
third part of each week consists of exercises which present the application of the theory
from the lectures and the functionalities from the tutorials. A hands on coding example
concludes every exercise. The recap questions and the coding examples are used to
trace your progress. During Week 1 and Week 2 all recap questions and exercises are
not graded. This gives you the chance to take part in it and get a feeling of how the
course is structured. From Week 3 on, all tasks are graded and available for verified
learners only.
Each week’s content and tasks will be released on Mondays at 08:00 UTC time. In the
following, you will find an overview over the different topics:
Week1: Basics of oscillation (ungraded)
Definition of important parameters of an oscillation. Introduction to the methods of
modelling and discussion about modelling depth. Derivation of an equation of motion of a
translational one degree of freedom system.
Start date: 07 Jun 2021
Week2: Discrete systems with one degree of freedom and its eigen behavior
(ungraded)
Analytical solution of an equation of motion and animation of the results. Analysis of
three typical cases of eigen behavior. Introduction to state space representation and
numerical solution of an equation of motion. Getting started with Simulink.
