Leaflet 1 - How to purchase online

There are many Internet sites that you can go to in order to buy books. All the major bricks and mortar
book sellers also have online stores. Also there are sites that specialise in second hand books and then
some that are aimed at more select markets, these may sell hard to find books, out of print books or
specialise in a particular type of book, for example educational books.
An eBook means an electronic book. These are not produced or read on paper, but rather on some
computers or specialist hardware called e-Book readers. The great advantage of this type of book is that
hundreds of books can be stored in the space that would be taken up by just a few pages of a
conventional book. Also they are very cheap to distribute, it is very easy to make changes or correct
mistakes, and they are arguably more environmentally friendly.

To get the best deal on the book that you want it is well worth doing some research. You might want to
consider the following points.
 Post and packing charges – Some companies offer this for free.
 Delivery times – Be aware of the country of origin.
 Reputation – Be aware of the book seller’s reputation.

How safe is online shopping?


Online shopping can be just as safe as shopping in your high street, in fact most online fraud happens
because card details are stolen in the “real” world and then used online. None the less there are several
things that you can do to allow you to shop online with confidence. Make sure that you are shopping at a
secure website. If you are then you should see the locked padlock or unbroken key symbol showing in
the bottom of your browser window. When you get to this page you should also notice that the URL will
change from starting with “http” to “https”.
After you have placed your order make sure that you take a copy of the order form and file any emails
that are sent to you. It is always a good idea to check your bank statements and to then contact your
bank if there are any transactions that you don’t recognise. So if you decide to shop online rather than
shopping on the high street, you can be confident of a happy shopping experience if you follow the above
common sense precautions.
