Problem Set 3 Buoyancy and Stability of Submerged Objects - Upload

This document contains a 10-question problem set on buoyancy and stability of submerged bodies. The questions cover topics like calculating buoyant force, determining specific gravity, finding stability of submerged objects, and calculating depth required for floating ships. Sample calculations are provided for buoyant force on a cube, acceleration of a rising balloon, specific gravity of a wood block, center of pressure and center of gravity, depth of a pool, and stability of cylinders, cones and cubes submerged in fluids.

PROBLEM SET 3 For MIDTERM- BUOYANCY AND STABILITY OF SUBMERGED BODIES

1. A Solid material in a cube shape floats in oil of density 800 kg/m 3 with one third of the
block out of oil. What is the buoyant force on the cube whose edge in 0.75 cm. Ans.
(0.002207N)

2. The weight of the balloon and the gas it contains is 11.12 kN. If the balloon displaced
1132 m3 of air and weight of 1 m3 of air is 12.3N. what is the acceleration with which the
balloon begins to rise? (2.47 m/s2)

3. A block of wood floats in water with 7 inches projecting above the water surface. It is
then placed in alcohol (SG=0.82) and projected 4 in. above the surface. What is the
Specific Gravity of the block? (0.66)

4. How far below the water surface should a vertical square 1m on a side with two sides
horizontal to be immersed so that the center of pressure will be 70mm below the center
of gravity,G? (0.69)
5. A wooden spherical ball with SG (0.42) and a diameter of 300 mm is dropped from a
height of 4.3 m above the surface of water in a pool of unknown depth. The ball barely
touched the bottom of the pool before it began to float. Determine the depth of the
pool. (3.11m)

6. A solid wood cylinder of SG 0.6 is 600 mm in diameter and 1200 mm high. If placed
vertically (SG=0.85). Would it be stable? (Unstable)(Prove that it is unstable)
7. A wood cone, 700 mm diameter and 1000 mm high floats in water with its vertex down
If SG of wood is 0.6? what is its Metacentric height. Also, is the object stable? (Object is
unstable, MG=-39.96mm)

8. A block of wood requires a force of 40 N to keep it immersed in water and a force of 100
N to keep it immersed in glycerin (SG=1.3). Find the weight and SG of wood. (W=160N,
SG=0.8)

9. A ship having a displacement of 24000 tons and a draft of 34 feet in ocean enters a
harbor of fresh water. If the horizontal section of the ship at the waterline is 32000 ft 2.
What depth of fresh water is required to float the ship? Assume that 1 Marine ton =
2240 lbs and that Specific weight of Sea water is 64 lb/ft 3 and Fresh water at 62.2 lb/ft3.
(34.76ft)
10. A plastic cube of Side L with SG of 0.82 is vertically placed in water. Is the cube stable?
(Prove that cube is STABLE)
